CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee girls basketball program picked up a key region win over the Greer Middle College Blazers with a 41-35 victory on Friday evening.
"It feels really good to pick up this win," said Chesnee's Pearl Holloway. "It gives us momentum going into our game on Tuesday." The Eagles opened the game on a 9-0 run sparked by five points from Carlee Turner as they led 16-3 after the first quarter while Bixley Koon also added five points in the quarter for the Eagles. "Every team wants to start off strong and that was our goal tonight," said Holloway. "It gave us momentum from the very beginning." The Eagles built a 25-9 halftime lead behind a strong performance from Pearl Holloway, who scored nine of her thirteen points in the half. Chesnee used strong post defense in the first half to keep the Blazers from having much offensive success. "We made sure to play sound fundamental defense as a team," said Chesnee's Jayla Dunn. "We boxed out and kept our position on defense." The Blazers came out of the locker room strong as they opened the half on a 9-0 run, sparked by seven points from Kinsley Shirley, as they pulled to within six after three quarters of play. That was as close as the Blazers would get to pulling off the comeback as a back and forth fourth quarter stalled the comeback. The Eagles had a big advantage on the glass sparked by fifteen rebounds from Jayla Dunn. "Our coaches have really worked hard on improving our rebounding and it paid off tonight," said Dunn when asked what led to her big night on the boards. Pearl Holloway led the Eagles with 17 points while Bixley Koon added 10 points of her own. Leah Turner led the Blazers with 13 points. The Eagles will return to action in another key region matchup on Tuesday as they travel to Liberty with the girls' game set for a 6:00 PM start which will be followed by the boys' game.
