CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee Lady Eagles opened the new year of 2023 with a win as they downed their rivals from across the border, the Chase Lady Trojans 44-28 on Monday night.
"I feel like we finally clicked tonight," said Chesnee player Pearl Holloway. "The team is starting to build great chemistry and this win gives us a lot of confidence heading into region play." The Eagles came out with a lockdown defense as they limited the Trojans to one point in the first quarter. "The defensive effort early on allowed us to build confidence on the offensive end," said Haley Edmunds. The Eagles opened the game on an 11-3 run and that allowed the Eagles to build a 13-10 halftime lead. Chesnee came out of the halftime locker room strong as they scored 17 points in the third quarter, including a 9-2 run to open the quarter, as Olivia Tolleson sparked the run with five points. The Eagles also ended the quarter on a 6-2 run. The runs in the second half continued for the Eagles to open the fourth quarter as they went on a game deciding 14-0 run. Four three pointers keyed the run with two coming from Carlee Turner. "When we hit our shots it gives us confidence that benefits on both ends of the floor," said Holloway when asked how the Eagles six three pointers helped sparked the team. The Eagles had a balanced scoring effort from the team as they had four players finish with nine or more points. Carlee Turner led the way with 11 points while Olivia Tolleson added 10 points. Pearl Holloway and Haley Edmunds each added nine points of their own. "When we are all working and doing our jobs it leads to opportunities for everyone which helps with our confidence and team chemistry" Edmunds said. Morgan McDaniel and Kinsley King led the Trojans with eight points each. Chesner will return to action on Friday as they open region play against the Blacksburg Wildcats with the lady's game scheduled to tip off at 6:00pm and the men's game will follow. BOYS GAME C.H.A.S.E 60 CHESNEE 43 The Chase Trojans downed the Chesnee Eagles 60-43 in the opening game of 2023 for both teams. The Trojans led 15-14 after the first quarter of play thanks to ten points by Landon Barnes including six of the seven points of an 8-0 Trojan run that turned an 11-7 deficit into a 15-11 lead. Daniel Wease led the Eagles with five points in the quarter. The back-and-forth action continued in the second quarter as a 15-14 game after the first quarter turned into a 25-23 game at halftime as Addison Archer scored five of the Trojans ten points and Braylon Blanton scored four of the Eagles nine points. The Trojans pulled away in the third quarter as they outscored the Eagles 24-4. Addison Archer built off his strong second quarter as he scored the first nine points for the Trojans to help spark the big quarter. The Eagles tried to claw back in the fourth quarter thanks to six points by Terrell Kessler, but the Trojan's strong third quarter proved too tough to overcome. Landon Barnes led the Trojans with 24 points while Addison Archer added 20 points of his own. Elijah Wease led the Eagles with 11 points while Dawson Pruitt added another 10 points of his own.
