LIBERTY, SC - The Chesnee boys' basketball team went on the road Tuesday night to Liberty and came back with their first region win of the season defeating the Red Devils 73-45.
The Eagles used some strong shooting along with a mixture of tough defense to get the game in their favor early and by halftime the game was all but decided. "We brought energy early and fed off that energy the rest of the game," said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. "We were able to use our defense to convert in transition early which was a key in our win tonight. We want to build from the momentum from tonight's win moving forward." Chesnee jumped out to an early 21-4 lead behind a strong first quarter performance from Kaylob Blanton who scored six of the Eagles' points in the quarter and a tenacious defensive effort that held the Red Devils to only four points. The Eagles continued their strong play in the second quarter outscoring the Red Devils 20-10 in the quarter on their way to a 41-14 halftime lead. Braylon Blanton (7) and Hayden Barnett (6) combined to score 13 of the Eagles' 20 points in the quarter. The third quarter saw the two teams play to a tie as they both score 22 points in the quarter as the Eagles were led by Carson Williamson (8) and Daniel Wease (6) who combined for 14 of the Eagles points in the third quarter. Jordan Burdette led Liberty in the third quarter scoring 12 of their 22 points. Chesnee once again outscored the Red Devils in the fourth quarter 10-9 to help seal an important region victory for the Eagles. Carson Williamson led the Eagles with 11 points as he was the only Chesnee player to finish the game with double digit points. The scoring was so spread out for the Eagles that nine of the eleven players on the roster scored at least one basket on Tuesday night, with the lowest of those having six points. Jordan Burdette led Liberty and all scorers with 15 points on Tuesday night. In the girls' game prior to the boys' game, the Chesnee Lady Eagles lost a tough road contest to the Red Devils falling 31-27 on Tuesday night. Both Eagles teams will return to the road on Friday night as they travel to Greenville Tech Charter for their final region matchup before making the second trip through region play starting next week.
