SALUDA, SC - The Saluda Tigers downed the Chesnee Eagles 4-0 in the opening round of the AA Upper State tournament on Friday night.
The game featured two talented pitchers at vastly different points in their careers as eighth grader Bella Rollins for Chesnee faced off against Newberry signed and All-State senior for Saluda Sam Minick. The first two and half innings went rather quickly as Chesnee's Bella Rollins and Saluda's Sam Minick got off to strong starts. Saluda was able to scratch across three runs in the bottom of the third as they plated Taylor Widener and Tamia Daniels on errors while Jana Pou picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Ella Gentry hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the fourth for the Tigers, and she later scored on an error to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead. The Eagles tried to mount a late rally in the seventh as Abby Fogle and Loren Potter each collected two out singles, but the Eagles were unable to complete the comeback. Minick scattered six hits and struckout four while picking up the complete game shutout win for the Tigers. Rollins only allowed one earned run of the four runs plated by the Tigers. She scattered six hits, and struck out two in her complete game performance. Saluda's Jana Pou and Chesnee's Delani Wright were the only batters to collect two hits. Wright and Saluda's Ella Gentry each collected doubles for the games only extra base hits. Both teams will be back in action on Monday and they will each hit the road, but they have to wait another day to see who they will face as Strom Thurmond at Gray Collegiate was postponed until Saturday evening at 5:00 PM. CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee Eagles downed the Fox Creek Predators 11-4 to win the District I-AA Championship, the programs third in the last four years, in front of a large how crowd on Wednesday night.
"This is a testament to our community for how much they buy into this program," said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. "It also shows how hard our girls are willing to work. I told them after the game, we are one of eight AA softball teams still playing. This is a huge accomplishment for our team and our school as a whole." Both pitchers got off to a strong start as both threw scoreless frames in the top of the first inning while Chesnee's Bella Rollins threw another scoreless frame in the top of the second inning. In the bottom of the second inning, a theme that lasted the entire game began to emerge, the bottom of the order was coming up big for the Eagles. "No one in our dugout is surprised," said Fogle. "We see it every day in practice. They have teammates and coaches in the dugout that fully believe in them. I'm so happy for them and proud of them for their mental approach tonight." Chesnee's Natalie Morris hit a one out single to set up back-to-back RBI singles by Faith Wall and Kyndall Brill as the seventh and eighth place hitters came through to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. The Eagles kept the scoring going in the next inning as Claire Owens hit a leadoff triple in the bottom of the third inning before Rollins' battery mate Ansley Blanton drove in Owens with an RBI sac fly to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Owens once again provided a leadoff spark in the bottom of the fifth inning as she drew a leadoff walk and stole a pair of bases. Blanton picked up her second RBI of the game as she hit into a sacrifice groundout to drive in Owens to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead. After five innings of scoreless performance in the pitching circle. the Predators were finally able to get to Rollins as they loaded the bases with one out before Jada Jennings drove in the first Predator run with an RBI single. After Rollins got a pop out for the first out, Hannah Andrews drove in the Predators second run of the game with her own RBI single. Perhaps the biggest momentum swing of the game happened during the following at-bat, as Bella Rollins struck out the Predator batter before Chesnee catcher Ansley Blanton tagged out a Predator runner trying to steal home plate to end the threat with the Eagles leading 4-2. The Eagles carried that momentum into the bottom of the sixth inning as they sent 10 batters to the plate and scored seven runs to take an 11-2 lead into the final frame Loren Potter got things started with a leadoff single and advanced to second on an error before scoring on Faith Wall's RBI double. "It feels good to be able to step up for my team tonight and help us out when we needed it," said Wall. Kyndall Brill followed Wall with her third hit of the game, a double, while the ninth placed batter Claire Cash drove in Brill with an RBI single. After Claire Owens and Skylar Barrett reached to load the bases with one out, Ansley Blanton picked up her third RBI of the game without the benefit of a hit with a bases loaded walk. Delani Wright and Natalie Morris each followed with run scoring singles as Wright picked up an RBI while Morris picked up a pair of RBIs. Loren Potter drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI groundout to make it 11-2 in favor of the Eagles as they headed to the game's final frame. Fox Creek attempted to make a comeback as Raygen Farris and Jada Jennings each picked up an RBI as Farris picked one up on a sacrifice fly as Jennings got her second RBI single of the night. The highlight of the inning for the Eagles came on the game's final play as shortstop Skylar Barrett fielded a ground ball and beat the runner to third base on a dive getting the final out allowing the Eagles to advance. The scene that followed was a joyous one as the team swarmed each other in the outfield and attempted to dump a cooler over Coach Fogle's head. Every Eagle in the starting lineup reached base including Kyndall Brill who went three of three with a double and a triple while also driving in a run. "Every single one of us works hard in practice," said Chesnee's Delani Wright. "It makes it easy for everything to come together during games like it did tonight." Faith Wall picked up a pair of hits including a double and drove in a pair of runs, which continued a big stretch in Wall's life as she celebrated her 16th birthday on Tuesday. "It feels great to have such an amazing experience between celebrating my birthday with my family and celebrating this win over Fox Creek with my teammates," Wall said. Bella Rollins picked up the win in the circle as she scattered five hits and struck out eight batters. "It's fun to watch her grow," said Fogle about Rollins. "She is just getting better each time out and becoming more consistent. She has grown so much this season in her mental approach. It's just fun to watch her pitch." Fox Creek has scored 39 runs in playoff games against other teams including a 17-7 win on Tuesday evening. Rollins held the Predators to five runs over 14 innings from the pitching circle. "It feels really good to shut down a really good offensive team like that," said Rollins. "I struggled through the final few frames, but I knew my teammates had my back." She also had several great plays behind her, especially in the final two frames including Ansley Blanton getting the third out at home to end the sixth inning. Delani Wright also made a nice running grab for the second out in the top of the seventh inning while Skylar Barrett's play for the final out of the game might have been the highlight of them all. "It's comforting to know they have my back," said Rollins about her defense. "It's a great feeling to know my teammates will always be there for me." "Any time we can make a great play for our pitcher we know all it does is give her confidence and remind her we have her back," said Wright said about the importance of making good plays behind Rollins. Jada Jennings led Fox Creek with a pair of singles and a pair of RBIs. The Eagles will be back in action on Friday night as they travel to Saluda for the opening game of the 2A Upper State Championship tournament. CAMPOBELLO, SC - The golf teams of Region I-2A all joined at the Links O'Tryon golf course on Monday to battle for the region championship and when the day was over it was the Eagles claiming their second straight championship.
Chesnee won the tournament by a large margin after firing a score of 316 which was 59 shots ahead of second place. While it was a good day for the Eagles which he was proud of his team about, head coach Adam Jolley said the team struggled a little early. "I am extremely proud of this team and their resilience," said Jolley. "Our first goal this year when we first met as a team was to win the region championship and we accomplished that goal today. We got off to a rough start today through the first six or seven holes, but they battled until the very end." The Eagles were led by seventh-grader Caleb Green who shot a score of 74, which was one shot behind the individual region champion. "I was really impressed with Caleb who finished one shot behind this year's player of the year," said Jolley. "I told him he had to make an eagle on the last hole to tie and he gave it his best effort. He left himself with an easy tap-in birdie." Green was joined on the All-Region by three teammates as Creighton Rentz (77), Spartanburg County tournament champion Peyton Lawter (82), and Jake Hefner (83). The Eagles will now prepare for the 2A state championship tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Cheraw State Park, where they look to accomplish another goal. "Overall, we played well, and we're excited about returning to the AA state championship next week," said Jolley. "We want to try and accomplish our second goal of a state championship." CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee Eagles clawed their way to the District I-AA championship game with a 9-2 win over the Fox Creek Predators in front of a large home crowd on Friday night.

After a wild pitch advanced both runners, Skylar Barrett hit a deep fly ball to right field that allowed two runs to score on the sacrifice fly to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Sellars later stole second base before later scoring on Natalie Morris 's RBI double to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Rollins pitched another strong frame in the top of the third inning, before the Predators were able to finally have some success against her in the top of the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Natalie Morris helped the Eagles get a run back as she hit a leadoff single and later worked her way around to third base. Loren Potter drove her in when she hit an RBI sacrifice ground out to make it 4-2 in favor of the Eagles. Chesnee rattled off five consecutive one out hits as Ansley Blanton, Skylar Barrett, Delani Wright, Jada Sellars, and Natalie Morris all reached base, with Barrett hitting a double. Wright drove in two runs on her single and later stole home after another runner took the defense's attention away trying to advance. Morris later scored as well on a wild pitch. The Eagles tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Skylar Barrett drew a two out walk and later stole second base before scoring on Delani Wright's RBI single, her third RBI of the game, to make it 9-2 in favor of the Eagles. This week has been a big week for Barrett as she was also recently named to the 2024 AA Softball All-State team. "It feels really special to be one of the 24 girls in AA to be picked for the All-State team," said Barrett. "That's a huge accomplishment for me as I watched my older sister (Kaitlyn) get All-State in volleyball, so it feels really amazing to be recognized for the same award." Rollins finished the game off strong after the two run homer as she retired 10 of the final 12 batters she faced, including striking out the side in the final frame to secure the win. Rollins, an eighth grader at Chesnee Middle School, formed an impressive duo with fellow eighth grader and battery mate Ansley Blanton as the pair worked well together to limit an offense that scored 22 runs in its last outing to just two runs. "It was definitely motivation," said Rollins. "Everyone in the dugout had their energy up and made sure we all stayed ready to compete." Blanton made sure to add "and Bella, she was amazing out there tonight." Rollins threw a complete game, allowing just the two runs as she scattered four hits, and striking out 11 Predator batters. "She works her tail off and everyone behind her believes in her," said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. "She's not pitching like an eighth grader anymore. She has grown up, and we are very proud of her. I'm really proud of how she competed tonight." Rollins was quick to give credit to the defense that plays behind her for he successful outings. "Just knowing they have my back is very comforting," said Rollins. "Knowing that even if I make a mistake, they have my back. It's also great to have a catcher like Ansley behind the plate." Delani Wright had a big night at the plate with a pair of hits and three RBIs while Natalie Morris picked up three hits including an RBI double. "This is the second game of the playoffs and to help my team pull out this win is an amazing feeling," said Wright. "It gives me confidence going forward." Chesnee's Kyndall Brill struck out the side in the top of the first inning for the Eagles, and the next time she threw a pitch she was working with a 9-0 lead. INMAN, S.C. – On the heels of a matchup in the previous 24 hours, the Chesnee Eagles and Chapman Panthers baseball clubs closed out their respective regular seasons with the return match of a home-and-home series.
On this night, a big inning and strong showing on the mound were the difference as Chesnee claimed an 8-1 victory over Chapman. Each side plated a run in the first inning as Chesnee’s Kaden Orr singled to left and later scored on an error. Kole Brown led off the bottom of the frame for Chapman with a double to right field and tagged up on a Colt McPeters sacrifice fly, tying the game at one. The Eagles took the lead in the third as Daniel Wease’s two-run double to center plated Orr and Tucker Johnson, while a Zaiden Hammett single to left scored Aiden Greene. Wease scored from third on a Dawson Pruitt sacrifice bunt and Jaden Hill (courtesy runner for Hammett) sprinted home on a Kyle Martin base hit, creating a 6-1 lead. “Our guys were patient at the plate,” said Chesnee head coach Scott Wease. “And then, we got some fastballs in the zone. We attacked them, put the ball in play, and had a great at bat. We barreled up some balls (Tuesday) but didn’t have a lot of them fall. Tonight, we had some of those fall, got some base runners, and good things happen when you can do that.” Tucker Johnson – who recently committed to play collegiately Spartanburg Methodist College – smacked a two-run shot to right in the fourth, extending the Chesnee lead to seven. Chesnee hurler Brycen Sprinkle announced his presence with authority on the mound. The right-hander was highly effective with his pitch location and got some support from his defense. Orr flashed the leather in the second with a diving, over-the-shoulder grab in left field to erase an extra-base hit. Sprinkle then picked up a groundout before rattling off three straight strikeouts spanning the second and third frames. He also snagged a hot shot hit back to the mound in the fifth, which evolved into a 1-4-3 double play. Sprinkle tossed six strong innings for the Eagles, limiting the Panthers to an earned run, while scattering five hits to go with one walk and five strikeouts. “My fastball and changeup low and away,” Sprinkle stated when asked about what worked well during his outing. “The umpire was calling it out, so that was where I was going to throw it. That third inning was big (because) I had the trust in my team to get some runs so I could just keep focused on pitching.” Chapman pushed across a run in the seventh as Chandler Cartee singled to left and rounded the bases on a Brown opposite-field base knock to right, providing the final margin. Wease led the Eagles at the plate with a 2-for-4 night, scoring once and driving in two runs. Johnson was 1-for-3 with two runs batted in, while Hammett, Martin, and Pruitt each drove in a run. Orr also went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. As a team, Chesnee drew six free passes. “Brycen has thrown really well for us all year,” Wease added. “He has faced tough opponents throughout the season. I am really proud of him. He was throwing three pitches for strikes and only walked one batter, so he gave us a chance (to win).” Cole Daugherty paced the Panthers with a 3-for-4 effort at the dish, while Brown (2-for-4, run, RBI) and Cartee (2-for-3, run) also recorded multiple hits. Tolleson also notched a base knock and a three up, three down inning on the mound. Both Chesnee and Chapman (12-11) will begin the district round of the 2A and 3A playoffs, respectively, with a home game on Tuesday, April 30th. "I was very excited to get in the circle on senior night and keep them off the scoreboard," said Barrett. "After we got out to the big lead we really wanted to hold the lead to 10 runs or more." Barrett is also the first Eagle to finish her softball career with four region titles as the Eagles recently capped off their fourth consecutive region title on Tuesday night. "But I'm proud of the fact that this senior class could continue to build on to the foundation of success that was built before us." The Eagles felt like this was a good tune up for the AA playoffs that starts next week. "This win sets us up for success as any time you beat a good team like that it gives you momentum and confidence going forward." Morris said. The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow as they travel to Landrum to take on the Cardinals in the final game of the regular season as first pitch is set for 7:30 PM.
