SALUDA, SC - The Saluda Tigers downed the Chesnee Eagles 4-0 in the opening round of the AA Upper State tournament on Friday night.
The game featured two talented pitchers at vastly different points in their careers as eighth grader Bella Rollins for Chesnee faced off against Newberry signed and All-State senior for Saluda Sam Minick. The first two and half innings went rather quickly as Chesnee's Bella Rollins and Saluda's Sam Minick got off to strong starts. Saluda was able to scratch across three runs in the bottom of the third as they plated Taylor Widener and Tamia Daniels on errors while Jana Pou picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Ella Gentry hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the fourth for the Tigers, and she later scored on an error to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead. The Eagles tried to mount a late rally in the seventh as Abby Fogle and Loren Potter each collected two out singles, but the Eagles were unable to complete the comeback. Minick scattered six hits and struckout four while picking up the complete game shutout win for the Tigers. Rollins only allowed one earned run of the four runs plated by the Tigers. She scattered six hits, and struck out two in her complete game performance. Saluda's Jana Pou and Chesnee's Delani Wright were the only batters to collect two hits. Wright and Saluda's Ella Gentry each collected doubles for the games only extra base hits. Both teams will be back in action on Monday and they will each hit the road, but they have to wait another day to see who they will face as Strom Thurmond at Gray Collegiate was postponed until Saturday evening at 5:00 PM.
