CAMPOBELLO, SC - The golf teams of Region I-2A all joined at the Links O'Tryon golf course on Monday to battle for the region championship and when the day was over it was the Eagles claiming their second straight championship.
Chesnee won the tournament by a large margin after firing a score of 316 which was 59 shots ahead of second place. While it was a good day for the Eagles which he was proud of his team about, head coach Adam Jolley said the team struggled a little early. "I am extremely proud of this team and their resilience," said Jolley. "Our first goal this year when we first met as a team was to win the region championship and we accomplished that goal today. We got off to a rough start today through the first six or seven holes, but they battled until the very end." The Eagles were led by seventh-grader Caleb Green who shot a score of 74, which was one shot behind the individual region champion. "I was really impressed with Caleb who finished one shot behind this year's player of the year," said Jolley. "I told him he had to make an eagle on the last hole to tie and he gave it his best effort. He left himself with an easy tap-in birdie." Green was joined on the All-Region by three teammates as Creighton Rentz (77), Spartanburg County tournament champion Peyton Lawter (82), and Jake Hefner (83). The Eagles will now prepare for the 2A state championship tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Cheraw State Park, where they look to accomplish another goal. "Overall, we played well, and we're excited about returning to the AA state championship next week," said Jolley. "We want to try and accomplish our second goal of a state championship."
