LIBERTY, SC - As teams begin to prepare for the postseason, they have to first compete in region championships and on Wednesday and Thursday the best of Region I-2A competed at Liberty High School for the right to compete at 2A Upper State.
Chesnee's Clay Davis continued his strong season, once again winning the boys' shot-put event keeping his record unblemished in the event this season. Davis won the region championship with a distance of 48'5" which he threw twice on both his second and sixth attempts. Davis threw the shot-put almost ten feet further than the next closest competitor. Junior Kjay Proctor added another region championship in the boys' discuss throw with a distance of 125'11", which he threw on his first attempt. Chesnee sophomore Ardenia Barnes won the region championship in the girls' discuss event with a distance of 92'6" just ahead of fellow teammate Eagles freshman Zibi Edmonds. In fact, the Eagles were dominant in the event taking four out of the top five spots that also included eighth-grader MerriElizabeth Cable and senior AmyRae Breitenbach. Barnes also won another region championship in the girls' shot-put event with a distance of 31'9" and was once again joined by teammates in the top five as sophomore Emma Schofield and MerriElizabeth Cable took home third and fourth place finishes. It wasn't the only event that the Eagles had runners take up the top spots as senior Adonis Burguess won the boys' 100m event with a time of 11.37 beating out eighth-grade teammate Marquez Franklin by a tenth of a second. Fellow eighth-grader Blake Cochran also finished in the top-five of the event. Cochran and Franklin also added a second and third place finish in the boys' 200m event. The Chesnee boys 4x100m relay team (Adonis Burguess, Christian Charles, Blake Cochran, and Marquez Franklin) won the region championship with a time of 44.55, just edging out Blacksburg with two-tenths of a second. The Eagles girls' 4x400m team (Olivia Stowell, Olivia Wampler, Anslie Middleton, and Claire Walker) finished runner-up in the event with a time of 4:37.27. Chesnee junior Jayden Williams was runner-up in the boys' 110m hurdles event with a time of 16.50 just falling short of the championship by seven-hundredths of a second. He added another runner-up finish in the boys' 400m hurdles event with a time of 59.76, which was just a second behind the region champion. Senior Tyrel Hamilton also added a runner-up finish in the boys' 400m event with a time of 54.53. Sophomore Anslie Middleton also came away with a third place finish in the girls' high jump with a height of 4'7" which was just two inches short of region champion Nance-Marie Bradley from Greenville Tech Charter. Chesnee seventh-grader Tiana Jeffries also added a third place finish in the 400m hurdles event with a time of 1:18.88, just two seconds behind second place. In the overall team standings, the Eagles came away with third place finishes on both the boys' and girls' sides. The Eagles will now get back to work to prepare for the 2A Upper State championships on May 11 that will be held at Liberty High School. Comments are closed.
