CHESNEE, SC - The Chesnee Eagles, sparked by a big first inning, downed the Abbeville Panthers 13-6 in the opening round of the AA District I playoffs in front of the home crowd on Wednesday night.
"It feels amazing to pick up this first win as we have been working hard at practice," said Chesnee's Delani Wright about the win. "To go ahead and get the first game out of way it makes us feel good as a team." Chesnee's Kyndall Brill struck out the side in the top of the first inning for the Eagles, and the next time she threw a pitch she was working with a 9-0 lead. "In any game, especially a playoff game it's big to get out to a fast start," said Wright. "It just raises the confidence of the entire team." The Eagles sent 12 batters to the plate with all but one batter in the lineup reaching base at least once. Ansley Blanton, Skylar Barrett, and Delani Wright got things started with RBI extra base hits with Blanton and Wright hitting doubles while Barrett hit a triple. Wright later scored on an error. Later in the inning, Claire Owens hit a bases clearing three RBI triple to bust the game open. Harley Grady followed her with an RBI triple of her own while Ansley Blanton hit her second RBI double of the inning to cap the scoring. Brill continued her strong start in the circle as she retired nine of the first 10 batters she faced. Abby Fogle led off the bottom of the third inning with a single for the Eagles before later scoring on a Claire Owens RBI single to push the lead to 10-0 over the Panthers. The Panthers scratched across four runs in the fourth and fifth innings as Maddie Beiler and Garianna Burton each drove in a run while Chloe Mobley drove in a pair of runs with a double to make it 10-4 in favor of the Eagles. Chesnee pushed the lead back to nine in the bottom of the sixth inning after Jada Sellars and Loren Potter both hit RBI triples while Abby Fogle added an RBI sacrifice fly. "We knew we needed to pick our energy back up," said Chesnee's Jada Sellars. "We were able to string some big plays together to get us right back where we needed to be." The Panthers tried to claw back in the top of the seventh inning as Chloe Mobley and Lillie Stone each picked up RBIs, but they were unable to pull off the comeback. Kyndall Brill threw a complete game for the Eagles as she struck out eight batters while scattering eight hits. "We struggled a little bit in the middle of the game, but we rallied together to pull out the win," said Brill. "Anytime your team puts up nine runs in an inning it gives you a lot of confidence in the circle." Claire Owens picked up two hits and drove in four runs for the Eagles as Delani finished the game with three hits for the Eagles including an RBI double in the first inning. Chloe Mobley led the Panthers with a hit and three RBIs. Chesnee will be back in action on Friday as they host Fox Creek as first pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM. "This game gave us confidence, but these runs don't transfer," said Brill. "We need to go out there and play like we did in the first inning (on Friday)." Comments are closed.
