The Chesnee Eagles softball team downed the Woodruff Wolverines 3-1 in a matchup of county rivals on the softball diamond Monday night.
Chesnee got a stellar performance from starting pitcher Ali Scruggs who struck out seven and allowed only one hit in five innings of work to pickup the win. Sam Carver took over in the circle to start the top of the sixth and struck out five batters to pickup the save. "Both of our pitchers did a fantastic job and the defense played great behind them," said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. "I'm just proud of the resiliency of our girls." Scruggs worked herself out of a jam in the top of the first after a Chesnee error and a walk put runners on first and second but she got back to back outs to keep the Wolverines off the scoreboard. Chesnee tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the second inning when Mattie Martin singled and Ali Scruggs walked but the Wolverines Corrine Marshall was able to work her way out of the jam. Woodruff got on the board in the top of the third inning when Regan Kay blasted a shot to almost straight away centerfield for a solo homerun to put Woodruff up 1-0. Chesnee tried to respond in the bottom of the third inning as a pair of back to back singles from Martin and Kyleigh Thompson put two on with one out. After an Eagles pop out the Eagles Maddie Handy followed with a single, but an excellent throw from Wolverines centerfielder Julie Sinclair nailed Martin at the plate as she tried to score. The Eagles offense finally got rewarded for their effort in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to four consecutive two out singles as Kyleigh Thompson and Shenandoah Bishop got the rally started before Maddie Handy and Sam Carver drove them home to each collect an RBI giving Chesnee a 2-1 lead. "As hard as these girls work we knew runs were coming as we were having good at-bats and hitting the ball hard," said Fogle. "We could've gotten down after Woodruff made a great play in center to get that out at home but the girls didn't and they responded well." After giving her team the lead in the previous inning Carver took over in the circle and promptly struck out the side in the top of the sixth. An inning after her great play in the field Chesnee's Logan Lawter drew a one out walk and stole second base to get into scoring position. Martin drove home Lawter with a RBI single to increase the Eagles lead to 3-1. Woodruff tried to mount a comeback with a pair of singles from Natalie Montjoy and Autumn Williams but Carver responded with a strikeout to end the game. The Eagles will travel to RS Central on Wednesday at 6pm and will open region play on Thursday at 7pm against Carolina. Comments are closed.
