The Chesnee Eagles softball team finished 3-2 this weekend as they competed in the Lady Rebel invitational at Middle Tyger River Park.
"They were gutsy in every game and it was a great job by assistant coaches of coaching on the run pitch by pitch,” said Chesnee head coach Tripp Fogle. “Several girls had to step into roles they don't normally play because of various injuries and we had numerous players who contributed throughout the weekend. We faced several good players and hopefully this gave us some much needed game speed practice for the rest of our additional region games." Chesnee fell to tournament host Byrnes in the opening game 8-0 as Byrnes' Haylee Whiteside picked up the win for the Rebels and was one of five Byrnes players to pick up a RBI. The Eagles bounced back to down the Emerald Vikings in the final of Friday night with Ali Scruggs picking up the win in the circle by providing the game winning two RBI single in the bottom of the fourth. Chesnee stole eight total bases with Maddie Handy leading the way with three as Kiersten Moore hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first for her first of the season. In the first game on Saturday the Eagles fell to the York Cougars 5-3 as the Eagles collected six hits with Mattie Martin leading the way with three and Hannah Henderson leading the way with two RBIs. Chesnee bounced back to beat Liberty 11-4 after scoring five runs in both the fifth and the sixth innings. Mattie Martin and Logan Lawter led the way as Martin had a hit and three RBIs while Lawter had two hits and four RBIs. Maddie Handy picked up the win in the circle. In the final game the Eagles scored in each of the final five innings to down their rival Chapman Panthers 8-1 as Shenandoah Bishop and Logan Lawter each collected three hits. Brandolin Bearfield drove in the first two Eagles runs with a two out single in the bottom of the first and later added a third RBI with a bases loaded walk. Ali Scruggs picked up the win in the circle for the Eagles. "I’m very proud of our lone senior Logan Lawter for being named to the All-Tournment team,” said Fogle as Lawter finished with five hits and five RBIs in the tournament. Chesnee will return to action on Tuesday at Chapman in a region matchup. Comments are closed.
