The Chesnee Eagles used solid execution in all three phases of the game to down the Chase Trojans 8-0 in a matchup of schools that are less than fifteen minutes apart on Wednesday night. Blake Scruggs got the Eagles off to a solid start with a leadoff single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Gabe Murabito advanced Scruggs to third base, the Eagles Chris Osment drove in his first of three RBIs on the night with a single to put Chesnee up 1-0 headed into the bottom of the first inning. In the bottom of the first inning Chesnee's Cole Hoskyns started it off with a strikeout and later worked around two runners on base to hold the Trojans off the scoreboard. Chesnee was able to get the lead off runner on base in the top of the third inning when Camden Burns laid down a bunt on the third base side of the mound and beat out the throw before later stealing second base. Osment drove Burns in with a RBI double after Murabito advanced the runner in his second consecutive at-bat with a sacrifice. Chase's Jack McKinney tried to spark a two out rally with a single in the bottom of the third inning but Hoskyns once again worked around runners on to keep the Trojans scoreless through three innings. Hoskyns helped his own cause with a with a leadoff single in the top of the fourth and Jacob Kimbrell him followed with a single of his own. Bryson Scruggs followed Kimbrell where he was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Burns hit into a fielder's choice to drive in a run before Blake Scruggs hit into a groundout to the shortstop picking up an RBI and doubling the Eagles lead to 4-0 through four innings. Chase's Hank Bright and Ike Rollins drew walks in the bottom of the fourth inning to try to once again mount a Trojan's rally with Bright advancing all the way to third before Hoskyns picked up a big strikeout to end the inning and sending the Eagles into the fifth still leading 4-0. Chris Osment came in to pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning for Chesnee and sat down his first six batters while he also struck out seven in three innings of scoreless work. Kimbrell and Bryson Scruggs led off the top of the sixth inning with back to back singles with Scruggs picking up a RBI after Kimbrell came around to score for the Eagles. Chesnee lead off hitters reached base in five out of the seven innings and scored each time they reached base. Osment led off the top of the seventh and scored on one swing pf the bat as he lifted a ball over the left field fence for a solo homer giving him his third RBI of the game. Chesnee added two more runs on Chase errors as Landon Thompson scored on a wild pitch and Kimbrell hustled to score on a dropped fly ball. "We had hits up an down the lineup tonight," said Chesnee head coach Scott Wease. "I'm happy for Chris Osment because he has been working hard to get his timing back and adds tremendous pop to the lineup." Hoskyns and Osment combined to hold the Trojans scoreless while only allowing three hits. Hoskyns struck out four in four plus innings of work while Osment struck out seven in three innings of work. "We ask our pitchers to give us a shot," said Wease. "Both of them did an excellent job of that tonight." Chesnee will travel to county rival Woodruff on Thursday night. Chesnee Softball Falls To RS CentralThe R-S Central Hilltoppers downed the Chesnee Eagles 3-2 in a softball matchup that crossed state lines.
R-S Central got on the board first when Lani Warren blasted a solo home run to put the Hilltoppers up 1-0 in what turned out to be a pitchers duel. The Hilltoppers took advantage of a pair of Chesnee errors in the third as Farryn Smith and Abby Pringle both scored to increase the Chase lead to 3-0 over the Eagles. The Eagles worked to answer back in the top of the sixth as Mattie Martin and Sam Carver hit back to back singles and Shenandoah Bishop drove them in with a two RBI single to put Chase's lead at 3-2 and that was as close as the Eagles would get on Wednesday night. Chesnee's Sam Carver threw a complete game while striking out nine Chase batters as she surrendered three runs with only the solo homerun being earned. Chesnee will be back in action on Thursday as they open region play at home against Carolina at 7:00pm. Comments are closed.
