Chesnee, SC- Chesnee remembered all season the bad taste a home playoff loss to Dixie left in their mouths last season and made sure to pull out the win in a dominate 78-6 victory over the Lewisville Lions in the second round of the A/AA playoffs.
The Eagles went into the match with a focused mindset. "I challenged them coming in, because last year we got put out by Dixie," said Chesnee head coach Jon Rentz. "That was not going to happen this year. I have good senior leadership this year, and that has made a difference." Tyler Henderson collected a forfeit win in 113lbs weight class to get things started for the Eagles as he along with Quinton Gerstenacker, Aiden Mendoza, and Gunther Gerstenacker all picked up forfeit wins. Ricky Henderson picked up the first win for the Eagles on the mat with a pin in the 120lbs weight class. "It felt great to get us started," said Henderson. "I did what I had to do to get the win." Wyatt Hawk, Thaddeus Gerstenacker, Jesse Cozby, and Ezekiel Lazarin each followed with pins of their own. Next came freshly named North/South All-Star Garrett Williams in the 182lbs class, who also won with a pin in just fifteen seconds. "It feels good and it's an honor to be selected," said Williams about his North/South selection. "It feels good because I was selected by the coaches." "He is a leader, and the kids respect and listen to him," said Rentz about Williams. "He sets the tone at practice. He is just a good kid who works hard and deserves everything he is getting." Nick Hofer, Aiden Allen, and Chase Gregory each followed Williams with pins for the Eagles. Lewisville's Ethan Shipman collected the lone pin the Lions on Saturday morning. Chesnee will now move to the third round of the playoffs with a match at Ninety-Six on Monday. Ninety-Six defeated Pelion to advance to the third round of the playoffs themselves. Earlier on Saturday morning, the Eagles won their first-round match against Wagner-Salley before even entering the gym as they advanced by team forfeit. Lewisville advanced to the second round against Chesnee on a tiebreaker over High Point Academy for a 43-42 win. The tiebreaker was determined by who at the least number of forfeits. Jay Brown, Xander Dotson, Brendan Ross, and Said Gasimov each collected pins for the High Point Grizzlies. North/South All-Star Luke Crosby picked up a forfeit win for the Grizzlies. Aiden Smith collected the lone pin for the Lewisville Lions. Comments are closed.
