The Chesnee Lady Eagles picked up a huge 53-45 win over the Chapman Lady Panthers on Friday night as they reached the halfway mark of region play in a three way tie for second place with both Chapman and Broome. "This is a big win for us," said Chesnee head coach Carey Burns. "This win gives us confidence going into the final four games of region play." "Beating Chapman is a huge win especially coming off a loss at Broome on Tuesday," said Chesnee senior Abbey Ray. "Everybody on the court wanted this win tonight." Ray got the scoring started for the Eagles with a three-pointer that was quickly answered by a three-pointer from Chapman's Stelly Musser to jump start what would be a back and forth affair. Ray led the Eagles with seven first quarter points to help the Lady Eagles build a 17-14 lead after the first quarter of play. Musser led the way for the Panthers with six first quarter points. The Eagles extended their lead to 29-22 at the halftime break by ending the half on a 6-1 run sparked by a three-pointer from Jamekia Evans. Chapman's Diamond Martin scored back to back baskets with just over five minutes to go in the half to pull the Panthers to within three points but the Eagles quickly pulled away once again. In the third quarter Musser and Ray once again traded three pointers as Musser's shot pulled Chapman to within two with just over five minutes remaining in the third and Ray responded with a shot of her own. The Eagles closed the quarter on an 11-5 run to build the lead back up to eight. The Panthers pulled within five points with just a minute remaining in the game but a steal and a layup by Kymiah Blair increased the Chesnee lead back to seven. Blair would later hit a free throw to seal the game for the Eagles. The Eagles got monster games from the duo of Jessa Beach and Abbey Ray as they combined for twenty-five points and twenty-six rebounds on Friday night. Beach recorded thirteen points and thirteen rebounds while Ray added twelve points and thirteen rebounds. Kymiah Blair and Jamekia Evans joined their teammates in double digit points as Blair scored twelves points and Evans added eleven points. "It takes pressure off of my post players and helps us open up the defense," said Burns about having four different players in double figures of scoring. "That allows more opportunities for us inside," Seventh grader Krislyn Britt had a solid night as she scored thirteen points off the bench for the Panthers and Stelly Musser ended the night with nine points for the Panthers. The Eagles will be back in action on Monday night at 6:30pm as they host Lewisville.
