The Chesnee Eagles started their 2020 home schedule on a high note as both basketball teams picked up win over their counterparts from just across the state line, the Chase High Trojans.
In the boy's game the Eagles used a big fourth quarter to down the Trojans 60-45 and finished out a stretch of tough competition that the Eagles have faced during the holiday break. "We played some good competition during the break including our Christmas tournament,” said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. “That tournament along with our non-region schedule has helped to prepare as we move into region play." The Eagles came out with a fast start as they led 8-2 just two minutes into the game thanks to a three pointer from Lorenzo Duren and they finished the quarter on an 8-4 run to build a 16-6 lead after one quarter of play. The second and third quarters saw Chase find its way back into the game as they outscored the Eagles 35-28 over the two periods. Chase used a quick 8-2 run to pull with four just two minutes into the second quarter as Tyler Wilson scored six of the Trojan's eight points during the run. Cole Hoskyns and Lorenzo Duren combined to score ten of Chesnee’s thirteen points to give the Eagles a 29-28 halftime lead. Chase's Trent Greene hit back to back baskets in the final twenty seconds to cut the Eagle's lead to one. Greene got another big basket in the third quarter as he gave Chase their first lead of the night with a three pointer just over a minute into the third quarter. Chase's largest lead of the night was at 40-36 with 2:32 left in the third but the Eagles were able to grab the momentum away by closing the quarter on an 8-1 run that was part of a huge 24-5 run to close the game. Nyquille O'Fair has been a been big for the Eagles over the break and he was just that in the fourth quarter as he scored eleven of his seventeen points in the final quarter. "Nyquille made some big shots for us,” said Pitt. “We also had several guys step up and make plays defensively." Cole Hoskyns and KJ Valentine had a huge game down low for the Eagles as the duo combined for seventeen points. The pair was outsized around the basket, as Chase had 6'11" Tyler Wilson and 6'7" Addison Archer, but their play was key in the Eagles victory. Lorenzo Duren joined O'Fair in double figures as he finished the night with eleven points for the Eagles. Trent Greene led the Trojans with thirteen points while Tyler Wilson added eleven points of his own. Chesnee will be back in action on Thursday as they host Ware Shoals with the girls game starting at 6pm and the boys game to follow. In the girls game the Chesnee Lady Eagles set a new school record for fewest points allowed in a game as they downed Chase 44-1 to pick up their second win in a row and third in their last four games. "Winning back to back games to end the holiday break gives us the momentum we need as we prepare for region play next week,” said Chesnee girls basketball head coach Carey Burns. Kymiah Blair helped pace the Eagles in the first quarter as she scored six points and Jessa Beach added four points to help the Eagles build a twelve point lead. Abbey Ray had a 7-0 run of her own to help the Eagles build a 21-0 lead with just under five minutes to play in the second quarter as Carley Hammett also added five points in the quarter. Logan Lawter got back to back baskets to start the second half and finished with seven third quarter points. "Anytime Logan is on the court she’s going to give you everything she has,” said Burns. “A lot of time when you work hard on the defensive end good things happen." The Evans twins combined for six third quarter points as Jamaya had four points and Jamekia added two. Brie Smith scored her first points of the game in the fourth to put all eight players on the Eagle's roster in the scoring column. Five different Eagles scored five or more points led by Abbey Ray with ten points while Logan Lawter added seven and Jessa Beach and Kymiah Blair each added six points. Comments are closed.
