BOILING SPRINGS, SC - After the two teams battled to a one-point game just last week, it came to no surprise to anyone in the gym on Wednesday night when the Boiling Springs and Clover game down to the last minute to decide the outcome as the Bulldogs came away with a 61-58 victory.
The win gives the Bulldogs their third straight win as they've defeated Chesnee, Union, and Clover over the last three games with a rematch at Chesnee coming on Friday. "A win is always better than a loss but there's a lot of things we still need to clean up execution wise," said Bulldogs head coach Craig Martin. "When it's all said and done though, they fought through a lot and got better. I think we learned a lot and it's for sure better coming out on the winning end this time unlike the last time we played them." Clover took the first lead on a shot from Vincent Alexander before Reese Walter responded to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead in the first quarter. The Blue Eagles took a 9-4 lead before the Bulldogs Landon Sprouse went on a five-point run of his own to tie the game at 9-9 with just under four minutes to go in the quarter. Clover then outscored the Bulldogs 7-3 over the final three minutes to take a 16-12 lead at the end of the quarter. The game went back-and forth in the second quarter and the Bulldogs took a 19-18 lead at the five-minute mark when Tre Locklear hit a three-pointer from the left corner. The Blue Eagles retook the lead at 29-26 when the buzzer sounded for halftime. The third quarter was made up of two different four-point runs by the Bulldogs as the first one was a 4-0 run to allow the Bulldogs to take a 30-29 lead. The second run came at the end of the quarter as the Bulldogs trailed 42-40 but scored the last four points of the quarter to take a 44-42 lead into the final quarter of play. Boiling Springs took the momentum from the third quarter into the start of the fourth quarter as Landon Sprouse started the Bulldogs on a 5-0 run with a layup and a three-pointer from just right of the key to put Boiling Springs ahead 49-42 within the first minute of the quarter. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 51-42 at the five-minute mark but the Blue Eagles didn't go away easily as they battled back. Clover was able to narrow the Boiling Springs lead to 57-56 with thirty-seconds left in the game. With the Bulldogs leading by one, a Clover layup rolled out and Reese Walter came down with a key rebound before Landon Sprouse hit two key free throws. Sprouse finished the game with 21 points, two rebounds, and a steal to which Coach Martin said he was happy to see the potential from Sprouse that they have seen from him in practice. "Landon is a good player and is the real deal," said Martin. "He's got good size and we've been waiting for him to look like he has done in practice which he done tonight. He done some real good things too that you don't see in the scorebook like contesting shots late." Clover made one more run at the Bulldogs, but Dominique Johnson was able to hit two free throws to seal the game as a Clover half-court shot didn't find the goal as time expired. Tre Locklear finished the game with 17 points and a steal while Dominique Johnson added 11 points with nine rebounds, two steals, and a block. Vincent Alexander led Clover with 13 points as Haiden Akins joined him in double figures with 11 points of his own. BOILING SPRINGS, SC - In front of a loud home crowd on Friday night the Boiling Springs boys' basketball team took an 83-62 victory over Chesnee while the girls' team also came away with a victory as well earlier in the night.
The energy was electric in the arena when the tipoff was thrown up for the boys' game, an energy that had started as fans from both schools filed in during the girls' game. "A win is a whole lot better than a loss," said Boiling Springs head coach Craig Martin with a chuckle. "The guys have been working hard and they deserved to get a win, their hard work paid off tonight." With Martin coaching his first home game at Boiling Springs on Friday night, he said it was nice to get a taste of what the atmosphere for basketball could be like at his new home. "It could be a really good environment and it was great seeing fans from both Chesnee and Boiling Springs showing up," said Martin. "We really need to find a way to make it a home court advantage for ourselves and the only way to do that is to play good and exciting basketball. I think we can do both but it's just going to take time and hard work from our kids, and everyone involved." Boiling Springs started the game on a 7-0 run to take an early lead that only fueled the home crowd as they cheered with excitement. The Bulldogs used that momentum to establish a 30-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. They got big performances from three seniors to establish the tone early as Tre Locklear (10), Dominique Johnson (6), and WJ Fowler (6) combined to score twenty-two of the Bulldogs thirty points in the quarter. The second quarter saw Chesnee fight back as they closed the Bulldogs lead to ten points at halftime as they put the score at 42-32 when the buzzer sounded for the half. Locklear and Johnson scored all twelve of the Bulldogs points in the quarter as Noah Mvula and Carson Williamson helped lead the Chesnee charge scoring twelve of the team's twenty points heading into halftime. Chesnee was able to cut the lead to eight points but that's as close as they would get as the Bulldogs pushed their lead to a fifteen-point lead at 63-48 when the third quarter ended on their way to the 83-62 victory. Bulldogs' seniors Tre Locklear and Dominique Johnson had huge games on Friday night against the Eagles as Locklear scored 32 points with six rebounds, three steals, and a block while Johnson ended the game with an impressive double-double scoring 24 points with 15 rebounds, two steals, and a block. Coach Martin said he was proud of his seniors but it's something that they expect from the leaders of the team. "We talked about it in the locker room, that those two guys as seniors done exactly what they were supposed to do," said Martin. "I don't celebrate it a whole lot because they're just doing their job and what they're supposed to do. When you have two seniors that have bought in like they have it just makes my job easier and I'm excited for them." Chesnee was led in scoring by Carson Williamson and David Wease who both scored 13 points each for the Eagles on Friday night. GIRLS GAME In the girls' game Boiling Springs used a big first quarter to grab an impressive 50-20 victory over the visiting Chesnee team.
