BOILING SPRINGS, SC - In front of a loud home crowd on Friday night the Boiling Springs boys' basketball team took an 83-62 victory over Chesnee while the girls' team also came away with a victory as well earlier in the night.
The energy was electric in the arena when the tipoff was thrown up for the boys' game, an energy that had started as fans from both schools filed in during the girls' game. "A win is a whole lot better than a loss," said Boiling Springs head coach Craig Martin with a chuckle. "The guys have been working hard and they deserved to get a win, their hard work paid off tonight." With Martin coaching his first home game at Boiling Springs on Friday night, he said it was nice to get a taste of what the atmosphere for basketball could be like at his new home. "It could be a really good environment and it was great seeing fans from both Chesnee and Boiling Springs showing up," said Martin. "We really need to find a way to make it a home court advantage for ourselves and the only way to do that is to play good and exciting basketball. I think we can do both but it's just going to take time and hard work from our kids, and everyone involved." Boiling Springs started the game on a 7-0 run to take an early lead that only fueled the home crowd as they cheered with excitement. The Bulldogs used that momentum to establish a 30-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. They got big performances from three seniors to establish the tone early as Tre Locklear (10), Dominique Johnson (6), and WJ Fowler (6) combined to score twenty-two of the Bulldogs thirty points in the quarter. The second quarter saw Chesnee fight back as they closed the Bulldogs lead to ten points at halftime as they put the score at 42-32 when the buzzer sounded for the half. Locklear and Johnson scored all twelve of the Bulldogs points in the quarter as Noah Mvula and Carson Williamson helped lead the Chesnee charge scoring twelve of the team's twenty points heading into halftime. Chesnee was able to cut the lead to eight points but that's as close as they would get as the Bulldogs pushed their lead to a fifteen-point lead at 63-48 when the third quarter ended on their way to the 83-62 victory. Bulldogs' seniors Tre Locklear and Dominique Johnson had huge games on Friday night against the Eagles as Locklear scored 32 points with six rebounds, three steals, and a block while Johnson ended the game with an impressive double-double scoring 24 points with 15 rebounds, two steals, and a block. Coach Martin said he was proud of his seniors but it's something that they expect from the leaders of the team. "We talked about it in the locker room, that those two guys as seniors done exactly what they were supposed to do," said Martin. "I don't celebrate it a whole lot because they're just doing their job and what they're supposed to do. When you have two seniors that have bought in like they have it just makes my job easier and I'm excited for them." Chesnee was led in scoring by Carson Williamson and David Wease who both scored 13 points each for the Eagles on Friday night. GIRLS GAME In the girls' game Boiling Springs used a big first quarter to grab an impressive 50-20 victory over the visiting Chesnee team. The Bulldogs first half run saw them score the first seventeen points of the game on their way to a 28-5 lead at the end of the quarter. Boiling Springs' Sarah Ezell got the scoring started with a jump shot for two of her four first quarter points. Amiah Ellis (10), Kylie McMillian (9), and Natalie Trudell (5) led the Bulldogs first quarter run with quality shots and tough defense as they combined to score 24 of the team's 28 points in the quarter. Ellis and McMillian combined for seven steals in the first quarter as well. In the second quarter the Bulldogs defense was able to hold Chesnee scoreless in the second quarter on their way to a 34-5 halftime lead as sophomore Dakota Smith led the Bulldogs with four points in the second quarter. The third quarter saw a battle between the Bulldogs Sarah Ezell and Chesnee's Pearl Holloway as both went for nine points in the quarter. Boiling Springs outscored the Eagles 9-2 in the final quarter for the final score of 54-20 in favor of the Bulldogs. Sarah Ezell led the way for the Bulldogs with 17 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. She was joined in double-figures by Kylie McMillian who had 14 points and Amiah Ellis who finished the game with 10 points. Pearl Holloway led the way for Chesnee as she scored 13 points with nine rebounds and two steals. Boiling Springs will return to action on Tuesday at Union County before hosting Clover on Wednesday. Chesnee will travel to Broome on Monday before hosting Chapman on Wednesday. The Bulldogs and Eagles will face-off again next Friday when they take the rivalry to Chesnee on December 9th.
