Boiling Springs golfer Madison Dixon let it be known on Monday that she is playing some very good golf, as the golf season heads into postseason play, as she won the Region Player of the Year honors by defeating the field at the Region III-5A tournament at Chester Golf Club.
Dixon shot a score of 72 on Monday which was three shots ahead of the next closest golfer, Vivian Harris of Nation Ford. While Dixon won the Region Player of the Year honors, the junior also made her fifth straight All-Region team on Monday. "It feels real good to be a region champion," said Bulldogs Madison Dixon. "All my work is paying off and I can't wait to play at Upper State on Monday. Also it feels good to be going back to the same course for Upper State because I know I can do well there and I'll look to improve on my performance today." Bulldogs head coach Macy Tate said that she was proud of the performance by Dixon on Monday. "Madison did awesome today," said Tate. "She was in a group with the best golfers from our region and I think she led most of the day. She played really steady golf today." Dixon wasn't the only Bulldog to make the All-Region team as Sarah Wentz also came away with All-Region honors after firing a score of 81 at the golf course. Boiling Springs as a team came away with a third place finish at the region tournament after shooting a team score of 351 which was just two shots behind second place Fort Mill (349). Gaffney won the team region championship after shooting a team score of 332. The Bulldogs played their best team golf on Monday as they shot their lowest team score of the season in the region tournament. "I think we're in a good spot as we are playing our best golf of the season," said Tate. "Today was our best score of the season by twenty shots, which improved on our previous score from a week ago. I think we're moving in the right direction and I think we hit the ball well at Chester which should help us next week." With their third place finish the Bulldogs qualify for the Upper State championship that will be played next Monday at the same Chester Golf Club. As storms rolled through the upstate of South Carolina on Friday, the Boiling Springs football team saw running back Carmelo Martin storm through the Nation Ford defense but it wasn’t enough for the first victory of the season as the Bulldogs fell to the Falcons 56-27 in another region matchup.
”We got ahead 7-0 early but had a hard time stopping their offense,” said Bulldogs head coach Rick Tate. “We had some mistakes throughout the game that put us behind but just like I told our guys we’re just going to keep fighting.” The Bulldogs offense saw significant improvement against the Falcons as the team finished the game with 359 yards of offense which put them averaging right at seven yards a play as the majority of those yards came on the ground as the Bulldogs rushing attack accounted for 253 of those yards. Carmelo Martin, a junior running back for the Bulldogs, had a huge night for Boiling Springs as he led the rushing attack picking up 144 yards on seven carries with two touchdowns while also adding eighty-seven yards receiving on two catches with another touchdown. ”Carmelo had a great game,” said Tate. “He had two long rushes and probably had over two hundred yards tonight.” Boiling Springs took the lead early in the game when a bad snap on a Nation Ford punt gave the Bulldogs the ball at the Falcons seven yard line and quarterback Ketrone Adams took advantage of the mistake running to the right side before cutting back to the middle for a touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. Nation Ford responded by taking scoring twenty-one unanswered points from the nine minute mark of the first quarter until just over seven minutes were left in the second quarter thanks to three touchdown passes from quarterback Carson Black who found wide receivers Quadier Hand, Kenyan Bowman, and Jerrick Foster each for a touchdown, with the longest being the last one which was a fifty-four yard pass to Foster. Martin scored his first touchdown of the night when he took a swing pass from Ketrone Adams down the left side of the field sixty-nine yards dodging two defenders and outrunning the rest to cut the Falcons lead to 21-14 with just over six minutes to go in the game. The Falcons added one more score before the half as Black connected with Foster again for a sixteen yard touchdown pass to give Nation Ford a 27-14 halftime lead. Jeremiah Hailstock ran a touchdown in from forty-four yards out to push the Falcons lead to 35-14, which turned out to be the only score in the third quarter. Eli Whitner opened the fourth quarter with a five yard touchdown run to push the Nation Ford lead to 42-14 over the Bulldogs. Martin struck again for the Bulldogs just twenty-three seconds after the Nation Ford score as he went seventy-yards in two runs, with the last being a twenty-seven yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 42-20. Nation Ford added two more scores as Black added another touchdown pass and Hailstock added a twenty-three yard touchdown run to give the Falcons a 56-20 lead. Martin finished his impressive game with a sixty-one yard touchdown run down the left side to put the Nation Ford lead at 56-27 as the Falcons melted away the last two and a half minutes of the game. While Martin had a very impressive game for the Bulldogs he wasn’t the only player to have a good game as fellow running back Kam Williams had seventy-two yards on thirteen carries. Quarterback Ketrone Adams, making his first start of the season, finished the game with 116 yards passing with a touchdown while also adding thirty-five rushing yards. Elijah Smith had four tackles for the Bulldogs, with one for a loss, while Brent Fowler added three more tackles, one for a loss, including an interception. Nation Ford quarterback Carson Black ended the game with 323 yards passing with five touchdowns to lead the Falcons offense that accounted for over 500 yards of offense on Friday night. Boiling Springs will look to build on their offensive momentum next Friday when they host Clover, who defeated Fort Mill 44-7 on Friday night, in another region matchup. In an unscheduled road trip on Tuesday afternoon, the Boiling Springs tennis team traveled to pick up Nation Ford to pick up a pivotal 4-2 region victory over the Falcons. A match that was originally scheduled as a home match for the Bulldogs saw them take the long trip to the greater Charlotte area and come away with an important victory towards region play. "This is a huge win for our team," said Bulldogs head coach Jill Cooke. "We were originally supposed to have a home match today but with the weather we were having locally and they weren't experiencing the same thing allowed us to flip the home matches. I'm so proud of the girls for pulling together in a rush while going so far away and battling to the bitter end." The Bulldogs saw all four of their top four seeds come away with victories as number one seed Madison Ball came away with the victory (6-3, 6-1) to start the match on the right foot for the Bulldogs. Sydney Braswell followed Ball at the number two singles with another victory defeating her opponent (6-2, 6-2). Emily Krechko and Kaiden Price both came away with victories in tiebreakers as Krechko defeated her opponent (7-5, 6-6, (7-3)) at number three singles and Price won (6-4, 3-6, (10-8)) at number four singles. Boiling Springs will return to the court on Thursday when they travel to Clover before hosting Nation Ford on Monday. Bulldogs Volleyball Falls In Nail Biter To FalconsThe Boiling Springs tennis team wasn't the only team to compete against Nation Ford on Tuesday as the Bulldogs volleyball team fell 3-2 in an extremely competitive home match.
In the match the Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 before a brief intermission in the match that saw Boiling Springs become a whole different team. The Bulldogs jumped ahead 2-0 to start the third set until the Falcons were able to tie the set at 5-5 before back-to-back kills by seniors Savannah Page and Logan Kenny reestablished the Boiling Springs lead. The Falcons were unable to get any closer in the set as the Bulldogs even extended their lead to eight points before Kenny came away with a block to give Boiling Springs a 25-20 victory in the third set. In the fourth set it was all Bulldogs as they took an early 1-0 lead and even went on an eight point run that saw both a spike kill and block kill from Kenny along with two ace serves from Gracie Kilgore. Cloe Wood pushed the Bulldogs lead to 24-14 on a spike kill to the middle of the Falcons defense before a mistake by Nation Ford gave the Bulldogs a 25-14 set victory while also tying the match at 2-2. Both teams battled hard in the fifth set as the Falcons took a 2-0 lead before a kill by Kenny and block by Wood tied the set at 2-2. With the Bulldogs trailing 8-7, Wood made the most impressive point of the match as she dove into the bench for a ball going out of bounds and with one hand sent it back over the net where it fell in between multiple Falcons players to tie the set at 8-8. From that point the Falcons went on a 7-3 run to end the set to claim a 15-11 set win and a 3-2 match victory over the Bulldogs. Savannah Page had a big night for the Bulldogs ending the match with twenty-four assists, twenty-six digs, seven kills and two blocks. The Boiling Springs swim team is one of the smaller teams in their region but came away on Saturday afternoon with numerous region championships and podium finishes from the Region III-5A swim meet held at the Fort Mill Aquatics Center.
Boiling Springs knew going into the region meet that they were at a disadvantage being one of the smaller teams but they didn't let that hold them back as they captured five region championships and three more podium finishes on Saturday. "We had a great region championship," said Bulldogs head coach Lanie Peden. "Almost one-hundred percent of our team had their best times and I couldn't ask for anything more. The kids done a great job motivating each other and really being a team today. When you go into a championship, knowing that the rules favor larger teams, it takes a lot of mental toughness to focus on your individual goals and swim best times which our kids done just that." The Bulldogs boy's 200y medley relay team (Will Humphreys, Ashton Threadgill, Garrett Watson, and Miles Humphreys) won the region championship with a time 1:41.75 finishing almost five seconds ahead of second place Clover. Will Humphreys won his second region championship in the meet when he won the 200y freestyle event in a time of 1:47.77 which was was over three seconds of the second place finisher. Humphreys added his third region championship of the meet winning 500y freestyle event with a time of 4:53.64 which was almost ten seconds ahead of the second place swimmer. Ashton Threadgill added his second region championship in the 200y individual medley finishing the event in a time of 2:05.18 giving him a four second victory in the event. Threadgill, like Humphreys, added a third region championship to his performance at the region meet when he came with the victory in the 100y breaststroke with a time of 1:02.20, which was two seconds ahead of his next closest opponent. Garrett Watson was just a second from adding his second region championship title in the 100y butterfly event as he came away with a second place podium finish with a time of 57.37. The boy's 400y freestyle relay team (Humphreys, Watson, Threadgill, and Miles Humphreys) also added a second place podium finish to their outstanding performance at the region meet with a time of 3:23.36 which was just under two seconds from being another region championship for the Bulldogs swim team. With the outstanding performance from the boy's swim team they came away with a third place overall finish at the region meet, finishing ahead of Gaffney and a much larger Clover team. "Our boys finished in third place over Clover for the first time which was a goal of ours," said Peden. "Now we wait to see who gets the invites to the state meet." Morgan Greenlee came away with a third place podium finish in the 100y butterfly event with a time of 1:02.64 which was just over a second from being a region championship. "My girls relay team swam their hearts out and are right there on the fence in regards to getting an invite to state and will be watching the scores all weekend long to see where we stand," said Peden. "I also want to give a huge shout out to Morgan Greenlee for making an automatic state cut in the 100y butterfly." The next scheduled event for the Bulldogs swim team will be the state championship meets held on October 8-9 at the North Charleston Aquatics Center. They will wait for all region championship meets to be completed before they know how many members of the team will be competing in the state championship meet. The #3 ranked team in 5A Gaffney traveled to Boiling Springs on Friday as both teams opened region play and it was the Indians that came away with a 34-0 victory over the Bulldogs.
While the Indians came away with the victory the Bulldogs stayed in the fight and even got a big spark on offense from quarterback Ketron Adams, who entered the game late in the second quarter. "Gaffney is a great football team with lots of tradition and it did us good to play them tonight," said Bulldogs head coach Rick Tate. "We got better tonight against a good physical team and we didn't back down from them." On the opening drive the Indians put together a drive that got inside the Bulldogs ten yard line but the Boiling Springs defense held strong and didn't allow a point as Gaffney missed a field goal attempt to keep the game scoreless. After the Bulldogs initial drive stalled in the first quarter, the Gaffney offense got two big drives from running back Tyler Smith as he scored from five yards out twice, once with just over five minutes left in the first quarter and the next with just a second left in the quarter, to give the Indians a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter the Indians added two more scores on the ground as Ken Littlejohn scored from one yard out with nine yards out and Smith added another touchdown just inside two minutes in the half to go to push the Gaffney lead to 28-0 over the Bulldogs. The duo combined for just over 200 yards rushing with a combined four touchdowns. On the ensuing kickoff Charkei Singleton had a fifty-four yard kickoff return to put them at the Gaffney forty-one yard line with just over a minute and thirty seconds left in the half. On the following drive Ketron Adams entered at quarterback, due to an injury, and led the Bulldogs on a drive to the Gaffney seven yard line with just under twenty seconds left in the half. A holding call and a field goal that sailed just left of the left upright kept the Bulldogs off the board as they entered the locker room for halftime. In the second half Adams continued to move the Bulldogs offense as he led them back inside the Gaffney ten yard line but a fumble that was recovered by the Indians kept the Bulldogs from another opportunity at points. With just over a half of time at quarterback Adams rushed for sixty-two yards and threw for twenty-two yards, which helped give the Bulldogs offense a spark it had been searching for this season. "Ketron is finally healthy enough to feel confident to run around," said Tate. "He definitely brought a spark to the team and I think we found something that's going to help as we go down the road." On defense the Bulldogs had a strong second half as they held the Indians to only six points, which all came on two separate forty-yard field goals. Luke Compton led the Bulldogs defense with eight and a half tackles while JoJo Barrett had four tackles including two sacks. Calvin Jackson, Joston Miller, and Malik Harper all had a sack for the Bulldogs defense on Friday night. "I think our defense done a good job especially in the red zone," said Tate. "We really tightened up in the red zone which we hadn't been doing earlier this season. We gave up a few plays early there in the first half then we really started playing better. We have some stuff we still need to work on but you have to be proud because the effort from the kids was there." Boiling Springs will return to action next Friday night when they travel to Nation Ford for another region matchup. The Falcons defeated Fort Mill 35-0 on Friday night. |
