The #3 ranked team in 5A Gaffney traveled to Boiling Springs on Friday as both teams opened region play and it was the Indians that came away with a 34-0 victory over the Bulldogs.
While the Indians came away with the victory the Bulldogs stayed in the fight and even got a big spark on offense from quarterback Ketron Adams, who entered the game late in the second quarter. "Gaffney is a great football team with lots of tradition and it did us good to play them tonight," said Bulldogs head coach Rick Tate. "We got better tonight against a good physical team and we didn't back down from them." On the opening drive the Indians put together a drive that got inside the Bulldogs ten yard line but the Boiling Springs defense held strong and didn't allow a point as Gaffney missed a field goal attempt to keep the game scoreless. After the Bulldogs initial drive stalled in the first quarter, the Gaffney offense got two big drives from running back Tyler Smith as he scored from five yards out twice, once with just over five minutes left in the first quarter and the next with just a second left in the quarter, to give the Indians a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter the Indians added two more scores on the ground as Ken Littlejohn scored from one yard out with nine yards out and Smith added another touchdown just inside two minutes in the half to go to push the Gaffney lead to 28-0 over the Bulldogs. The duo combined for just over 200 yards rushing with a combined four touchdowns. On the ensuing kickoff Charkei Singleton had a fifty-four yard kickoff return to put them at the Gaffney forty-one yard line with just over a minute and thirty seconds left in the half. On the following drive Ketron Adams entered at quarterback, due to an injury, and led the Bulldogs on a drive to the Gaffney seven yard line with just under twenty seconds left in the half. A holding call and a field goal that sailed just left of the left upright kept the Bulldogs off the board as they entered the locker room for halftime. In the second half Adams continued to move the Bulldogs offense as he led them back inside the Gaffney ten yard line but a fumble that was recovered by the Indians kept the Bulldogs from another opportunity at points. With just over a half of time at quarterback Adams rushed for sixty-two yards and threw for twenty-two yards, which helped give the Bulldogs offense a spark it had been searching for this season. "Ketron is finally healthy enough to feel confident to run around," said Tate. "He definitely brought a spark to the team and I think we found something that's going to help as we go down the road." On defense the Bulldogs had a strong second half as they held the Indians to only six points, which all came on two separate forty-yard field goals. Luke Compton led the Bulldogs defense with eight and a half tackles while JoJo Barrett had four tackles including two sacks. Calvin Jackson, Joston Miller, and Malik Harper all had a sack for the Bulldogs defense on Friday night. "I think our defense done a good job especially in the red zone," said Tate. "We really tightened up in the red zone which we hadn't been doing earlier this season. We gave up a few plays early there in the first half then we really started playing better. We have some stuff we still need to work on but you have to be proud because the effort from the kids was there." Boiling Springs will return to action next Friday night when they travel to Nation Ford for another region matchup. The Falcons defeated Fort Mill 35-0 on Friday night. Comments are closed.
