Means had seven catches for 113 yards and three touchdowns to help the Eagles defeat Carolina 54-26 on Friday night.
The Boiling Springs Bulldogs kept their region championship hopes alive as they defeated Hillcrest 42-21 on Friday night. The Bulldogs were led Friday night by quarterback Aaron Thomas who helped account for all but one of the Boiling Springs touchdowns while also passing for one-hundred eighty-three yards and rushing for thirty-four yards.
”I think people see his size and forget that this is his first season under the Friday night lights,” said Bulldogs head coach Rick Tate. “He has really matured these last two weeks and I’m really proud of him and the whole entire offense.” The Bulldogs started the game off with a kickoff return that was called back because of a penalty but that didn’t stop the offense though as they marched the ball eighty-five yards to get on the board first with an eleven yard touchdown pass from Thomas to wide receiver Chance Guest to give Boiling Springs a 7-0 lead. On the following Hillcrest possession the Bulldogs defense soon gave their offense another chance as they forced a Rams fumble that was recovered by Boiling Springs’ Marquise Graves at the Rams forty-four yard line. The Boiling Springs offense took advantage of the turnover pretty quickly as the Bulldogs marched the ball downfield on runs by Thomas and Charles McFadden while finishing off the drive with a one yard touchdown run by Thomas to give the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead with just over two minutes to go in the first quarter. After the Boiling Springs score Hillcrest was able to get the ball downfield themselves just as time expired in the first quarter when the Rams' Quendarius Jefferson ran the ball in from six yards out to make the Boiling Springs lead 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. It was all Boiling Springs in the second quarter on Friday night as the Bulldogs outscored Hillcrest 21-0 over the second twelve minutes of the game. The first score of the second quarter for the Bulldogs came when Thomas found running back Kentavious Epps on a forty seven yard touchdown pass to give the Bulldogs a 21-7 lead. The Bulldogs drove the ball seventy yards on the drive and sixty eight of those yards was earned by Epps. The Bulldogs second score of the second quarter came on their very next drive when Thomas found wide receiver Chance Guest for their second scoring connection of the game, this time for a forty yard touchdown pass to give the Bulldogs a 28-7 lead that capped off a ninety-eight yard scoring drive. The Bulldogs also got some big runs from Charles McFadden on the drive as he rushed for forty three yards before the score. The Bulldogs final score of the first half came on a three yard touchdown pass from Thomas to tight end Jamison Hartsoe to give Boiling Springs a 35-7 halftime lead. The scoring play was setup by an interception from Boiling Springs defensive back Storm Duck who intercepted a Hillcrest pass and returned it to the Rams five yard line. In the second half the Bulldogs defense held the Hillcrest offense scoreless and even got a score of their own when Boiling Springs' Caden Sullivan intercepted a Rams pass and returned it fifty five yards for a touchdown to give the Bulldogs a 42-7 lead at the end of the third quarter. Hillcrest was able to score two touchdowns in the final six minutes of the game as Colin Whitfield ran the ball in from five yards out and quarterback Ethan Beamish found Quendarious Jefferson on a two yard touchdown pass to give Boiling Springs a 42-21 victory. The Bulldogs ended the game with one hundred eighty-seven yards rushing on Friday night as Charles McFadden led the team with eighty-three yards on fourteen carries. Kentavious Epps also added sixty-seven yards on nine carries but also had two receptions for sixty-five yards and a touchdown. Boiling Springs' Chance Guest led the Bulldogs in receiving as he hauled in four catches for eighty yards and two touchdowns. With the victory the Bulldogs improve to 4-1 in region play and gives them a chance for a region championship with two critical games against Gaffney and Byrnes to finish out the regular season. "We're going to get to work on a way to beat Gaffney on Sunday," said Coach Tate. "We're going to take these last two games one game at a time. I expect there to be a great crowd here next week." Boiling Springs will host Gaffney next week after they defeated Riverside 48-14 on Friday night. The Boiling Springs tennis team continued on their way towards the playoffs on Tuesday night as they defeated the Byrnes Rebels 7-0 in their final contest of the regular season.
With this being the last home match of the regular season for the Bulldogs it was no surprise that they got strong performances from seniors Anna Greer who defeated Aggie Fowler (6-0, 6-0) and Mallory Cooper who defeated Reagan Marsh (6-0, 6-0) in their final regular season matches at Boiling Springs. The singles matches weren't the only victories for Greer and Cooper on Tuesday night though as they both were victorious in number one doubles as well. It wasn’t just the senior Bulldogs to have impressive matches on Tuesday night as Abigail Bragg (6-0, 6-3), Ava Bragg (6-0, 6-1), and Sydney Braswell (6-1, 6-1) all got singles victories for Boiling Springs. The Bulldogs finished off the victory when Madison Ball and Ansleigh Bragg (6-0, 6-0) got the victory in number two doubles. With the victory the Bulldogs sit third in Region II-5A and will await word on who their opponent will be in the 5A playoffs. On Monday afternoon the Boiling Springs golf team completed one of their main goals going into the season as they captured the Region II-5A golf championship at River Falls with a team score of 303 followed by Bynres (315) in second place and Dorman (347) in third.
"We played really well today and I'm very proud of the girls," said Bulldogs head coach Shannon Turner. "We set goals at the start of the season and this was the first one we wanted to check off." Coach Turner said that now that the team has accomplished their first goal she can tell that her team is focused on accomplishing the rest of their goals as well just by their attitude after the region tournament. "The girls are ready to get back to practice tomorrow," said Coach Turner. "They've already been telling me what they need to work on tomorrow to get ready for Upper State next week." The Bulldogs had three players be named to the All-Region team on Monday afternoon as MK Talledo shot a seventy, Madison Dixon shot a seventy-one, and Amber Amaker shot a seventy-five to help lead Boiling Springs to victory. Talledo with her score of seventy also was the medalist runner up behind Mauldin's Emily Dunlap who shot a sixty-nine on Monday. The seventy was especially impressive for Talledo though as her first tee shot of the game didn't go exactly how she had planned it. "I got off to a rough start after hitting my tee shot into a hazard," said Bulldogs golfer MK Talledo. "I think I did okay though and was able to get a bogey out of that." With the victory on Monday the Bulldogs qualified for the Upper State tournament that is going to be held on Monday in Rock Hill. The Bulldogs will look to qualify for the state championship with a good outing on Monday to check off the final goal on that preseason list according to Coach Turner. "Our ultimate goal is to be at state." Congratulations to Boiling Springs Cross Country Runner Kade Gosnell on being the Boiling Springs Sports Journal Athlete of the Week. Kade has finished first in several meets this year including winning the Cavalier Classic and most recently the Landrum Grill Master invitational this past week with a time of 16:43. Congratulations to this week's Boiling Springs Sports Journal Athlete of the Week Chesnee Volleyball's Abby Fisher. Fisher help lead the Lady Eagles to two wins this past week over Woodruff and Carolina and also collected her 1,000th career assist against Woodruff. She finished the week with 47 assists putting her at 1,032 assists for her career.
In a matchup that saw Spartanburg dominate Boiling Springs for the first twenty-nine years of the rivalry it has been the Bulldogs that have now won eight of the last eleven after defeating the Vikings 21-14 on Friday night.
With the victory on Friday night the Bulldogs have now won the last five matchups against Spartanburg. ”It has become a really good rivalry,” said Bulldogs head coach Rick Tate. “Our kids have come in not worried about the history but determined to make history of their own.” Boiling Springs’ Trey Miller put the Bulldogs on the board first on Friday night when he ran the ball in from twelve yards out with ten minutes left in the second quarter to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. The touchdown run was setup by a thirty-nine yard pass from quarterback Aaron Thomas to wide receiver Reggie Crocker to put the Bulldogs on the Spartanburg twelve yard line. The Vikings would answer with just under five minutes to go in the half when quarterback Keonte Cartledge threw a fifteen yard touchdown pass to Rykeem Ferguson to make the score 7-7 at halftime. On the opening drive of the second half the Vikings were able to work their way into Boiling Springs territory but two sacks by the Bulldogs Michael McDowell forced the Vikings into a fifty-three yard field goal attempt that missed right. After the missed field goal the Boiling Springs offense went on a drive to the Vikings end of the field and on a third and seven at the Spartanburg forty-eight yard line Boiling Springs wide receiver Chance Guest came up with a big catch from Thomas at the Vikings twenty-four yard line. Just two plays later Boiling Springs Trey Miller would score his second touchdown of the game running the ball in from twenty-four yards out and giving the Bulldogs a 14-7 lead with just under five minutes left in the third quarter. Miller ended the game with seventy-nine yards on nineteen carries with the two touchdowns. "We have three great running backs and Trey really took advantage of his chance tonight," said Coach Tate. "When we called his number tonight he responded." With the Bulldogs holding a 14-7 lead the defense added on to the lead when on the next drive Jayden Sims recovered a Spartanburg fumble and returned it thirty-four yards for a touchdown and extended the Boiling Springs lead to 21-7 with just under four minutes to go in the third quarter. The defensive play by Sims was just one of many by the Bulldogs defense on Friday night. ”I’m really proud of how this defense has played,” said Coach Tate. “The way they played such a good game last week and then come back out here and play like they did tonight I’m just really proud.” The Bulldogs defense was able to keep the pressure on the Vikings offense but with five minutes left in the game Cartledge was able to find Ferguson again this time on a nineteen yard touchdown pass to put the Boiling Springs lead at 21-14. With just under five minutes to go the Bulldogs offense got the ball and never let the Spartanburg offense have it back as they melted away the last four minutes and fifty-seven seconds of the game. The Bulldogs got key runs from Aaron Thomas and Trey Miller but it was a seven yard slant pass on a third and six from Thomas to wide receiver Caden Peeler that helped seal the victory for the Bulldogs. Boiling Springs quarterback Aaron Thomas finished the game nine of eleven for 112 yards and also rushed for forty yards to help lead the Bulldogs to the victory on Friday night. "I think this could have been the breakout game for Aaron," said Coach Tate. "He really ran the ball well and came up with some key passes when we needed him to tonight." With the victory the Bulldogs improve to 4-3 on the season and 3-1 in region play. The Bulldogs will host Hillcrest next Friday who defeated Riverside 57-19 on Friday night. The Boiling Springs tennis team went on the road Tuesday night and came away with a 5-2 victory over the Hillcrest Rams.
The Boiling Springs one through four singles all came away with victories in their matches as Anna Greer (6-1, 6-0), Abigail Bragg (6-2, 6-2), Mallory Cooper (6-1, 6-0) all won in two sets. Ava Bragg had the most exciting match of the day as her match was decided in three sets (6-1, 4-6, 10-5) but still came away with a victory for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs led 4-1 after all the singles matches were played and got an impressive performance from their number two doubles as Madison Ball and Ansleigh Bragg won (6-2, 6-1) to help secure the victory for the Bulldogs. Boiling Springs will look to continue their push for the playoffs when they travel to Gaffney on Thursday afternoon. On Tuesday night the Boiling Springs volleyball team celebrated their annual Pink Game, a night to honor cancer survivors and to raise money for cancer research, with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Spartanburg Vikings.
"The pink game has become an annual tradition that started many years ago with some players," said Bulldogs head coach Allyson Elliot. "Every year I ask our seniors if we're going to do it again and it's always answered with a definite yes. It's something that our school, parents, and community really get behind. The money raised by the Pink Game goes to the American Cancer Society." The Bulldogs took all of the support that comes with their annual Pink Game to the court with them on Tuesday night as they won their second match against Spartanburg this season. The first game saw the score go back and forth early as both teams were tied at 12-12 but the Bulldogs went on a 13-6 run to capture the first game 25-18. The second game was the most competitive game of the match as both teams battled throughout the game and both teams were tied at 24-24 before the Bulldogs captured the game 26-24. The Bulldogs were able to finish off the match with a 25-23 victory in game three to claim the victory. The Bulldogs were able to claim the victory 3-0 which is something that the Bulldogs had focused on doing going into the match on Tuesday night. "We haven't beaten anyone in three games this year as it usually takes us five games," said Coach Elliot. "Our goal tonight was to come in and play hard and consistent and see if we could take a team in three games. The region has been very competitive this year so we know the next week and a half we're going to have to play hard to try and secure a playoff spot." The Bulldogs were led on Tuesday night by Maddie Reed who had fifteen kills, Alex Fyfe who had eleven digs and Madison Gregory who had nineteen assists. Boiling Springs will return to the court on Thursday night as they travel to Hillcrest for another region matchup. Congratulations to Rachel Peden of the Boiling Springs swim team on being the Boiling Springs Sports Journal Athlete of the Week. Rachel won the Region II-AAAAA Championship this past Saturday in the 500m Freestyle while breaking her own school record in the event. She also recorded a 2nd place finish in the 200m Individual Medley. Congratulations to Chesnee Volleyball's Abbey Ray for being named this week's Boiling Springs Sports Journal Athlete of the Week.
