BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The 2023 season has been a historic season for the Boiling Springs boys soccer team but unfortunately a mixture of injuries and a slow start led to their exit from the 5A playoffs after falling to Mauldin 1-0 on Wednesday night.
"Our big thing is trying to build a program so that we're here competing in the playoffs every year," said Boiling Springs head coach Jack Underwood. "We want to be consistent so that we know what it's like to be in big playoff games. The playoffs are tough and we had a few too many injuries as well at the end of the day you need a little bit of luck. Neither side was really a threat to score on the other most of the match and it looked to be going to overtime, we threw everything we had at it but it wasn't enough." Both teams battled early in the first half as each team got a fair number of shots on the others goal. At the twenty-eight minute mark of the first half a questionable foul was called against the Bulldogs at the twenty-yard line of the football field. On the ensuing free kick the Mavericks saw junior Caiden Kopytin kick a left-footed shot that just barely sailed over the outstretched hands of the Boiling Springs goalie to take a 1-0 lead, which they took into halftime. Mauldin got another penalty kick opportunity at the eighteen-minute mark of the second half but Bulldogs goalie Diego Martinez made an amazing save to keep the match close, one of his ten saves in the match. The Bulldogs got numerous shots at the goal but could never find the back of the net as each opportunity just sailed wide of the goal. While the season didn't end the way the Bulldogs wanted it to, Coach Underwood says the Bulldogs have a lot to look forward to as they were a young team this season. "The future is bright for the program as this in theory would have been considered a rebuilding year," said Underwood. "Next year will be another great year and we'll continue to build from there, we're going to be here every single year." Boiling Springs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Justin Dawkins hit a double to right field before scoring on a Rylee Douglas single that also went to right field. Rock Hill added two runs in the top of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead as both Wyatt Faulkner and John Wimmer both came around to score for the Bearcats. He was followed to the plate by Hudson Wilson who doubled to left centerfield before later coming around to score on a Corbin Childers double to left centerfield to give Boiling Springs a 3-2 lead. The first of the two big innings for Rock Hill happened in the top of the fourth inning as they were able to load the bases and on a 3-2 pitch Cole Canty crushed a grand slam to straight left field taking a 6-3 lead over the Bulldogs. Chansen Cole led off the bottom half of the inning for the Bulldogs with a single to left field before moving to third base on an error and later scoring on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 6-4. Justin Dawkins followed Cole by reaching base on a walk before eventually scoring on a double by Hudson Wilson down the right field line to narrow the lead to 6-5 over the Bulldogs. In the top of the sixth inning the Bulldogs were able to get two quick outs against the Bearcats but an error on the potential third out kept the inning alive for Rock Hill, which turned into the second big inning for the Bearcats. Rock Hill was able to eventually load the bases before a double by Gabe Cassidy and a single by Coal Webster allowed the Bearcats to add on four more runs to push their lead to 10-5 over the Bulldogs. Boiling Springs tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Eli Mobley led off the inning with a double to left field before scoring on a groundout by Chasen Cole, but it wasn't to be and the Bulldogs were sent to the loser's bracket of the District playoffs. While the road is a little tougher now for the Bulldogs, their journey isn't over and the battle back will begin on Thursday when they host Nation Ford who fell 8-5 to Woodmont on Tuesday night. 5A GIRLS SOCCER PLAYOFFS - Fort Mill 6 Boiling Springs 1 A successful season for the Boiling Springs girls soccer program that saw them finish in second place of the region came to an end on Tuesday night as they fell to the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets 6-1 in the first round of the 5A playoffs. While the season didn't end how they wanted it to, the season was a good building block for a young Bulldogs team that will look to once again compete for a region championship next season. WEDNESDAY'S PLAYOFF SCHEDULE: BOYS SOCCER Mauldin at Boiling Springs 7:00 PM (Second Round Playoff Match) SOFTBALL Boiling Springs at Blythewood 6:30 PM (Opening Game of District Playoffs) BOILING SPRINGS, SC - After waiting almost thirty years to pick up another region championship, the Boiling Springs boys soccer team made sure to take advantage of their opportunity in front of a large enthusiastic home crowd that were on the edge of their seats all match long.
For the second season in a row, the Boiling Springs boys' soccer team advances to the second round of the 5A playoffs with a victory over Spring Valley, this win being a decisive 3-1 victory. "Winning the first one is always difficult because you're playing teams you only hear rumors about so it's hard to understand what you're up against until you hit the field," said Boiling Springs head boys soccer coach Jack Underwood. "We always hear this team is this or that so there's always a level of nervousness when you get out on the field as you have to prove you belong. That's something we're trying to do as a program is prove that we're supposed to be here and we're the team to beat every time we hit the field which I think we done a good job of tonight." Boiling Springs got the scoring going just seven minutes into the match when junior forward Val Bytyai made a right footed shot that he just got enough of to get past a sliding Spring Valley goalie to find the bottom left of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs added to their lead when sophomore midfielder Jose Ramirez broke away down the middle of the field before firing a right footed shot that went over the top of the leaping goalie to put the Bulldogs up 2-0 at the eighteen-minute mark of the first half. It was a lead that the Bulldogs would take into the halftime break. "Any time you're playing in a playoff game getting ahead and making the other team chase is a good thing," said Underwood. "We've been very good defensively as we only gave up two goals in region play, one of which was a penalty kick, but getting the early goal is always good but can also be worrisome because it can fire the other team up." Boiling Springs added their third goal of the match just a minute into the second half when junior midfielder Diego Perez-Vega corralled a shot by another Bulldogs player that ricocheted off the Vikings goalie before firing a left-footed shot that found the left corner of the net to put the Bulldogs up 3-0 in the match. Spring Valley added their only goal of the match at the eighteen-minute mark of the second half marking the only shot that got past goalkeeper Diego Martinez. Martinez had a strong night in the goal for the Bulldogs with 11 saves and Coach Underwood said he's one of three sophomore goalies that the Bulldogs have that he'd have confidence playing in any match. "I'm fortunate to have three great sophomore goalkeepers that I can rotate at any point," said Underwood. "Diego is a little more solid in penalty kicks and is solid but I'd be comfortable with any of the three being back there. Being a goalkeeper is all about being calm and controlling the game and getting the win." With the victory the Bulldogs move to the second round of the 5A playoffs where they will host Mauldin, who defeated Blythewood 2-1 on Monday night. The second-round matchup will be held on Wednesday with am expected start time of 7:00 PM. |
