BOILING SPRINGS, SC - The 2023 season has been a historic season for the Boiling Springs boys soccer team but unfortunately a mixture of injuries and a slow start led to their exit from the 5A playoffs after falling to Mauldin 1-0 on Wednesday night.
"Our big thing is trying to build a program so that we're here competing in the playoffs every year," said Boiling Springs head coach Jack Underwood. "We want to be consistent so that we know what it's like to be in big playoff games. The playoffs are tough and we had a few too many injuries as well at the end of the day you need a little bit of luck. Neither side was really a threat to score on the other most of the match and it looked to be going to overtime, we threw everything we had at it but it wasn't enough." Both teams battled early in the first half as each team got a fair number of shots on the others goal. At the twenty-eight minute mark of the first half a questionable foul was called against the Bulldogs at the twenty-yard line of the football field. On the ensuing free kick the Mavericks saw junior Caiden Kopytin kick a left-footed shot that just barely sailed over the outstretched hands of the Boiling Springs goalie to take a 1-0 lead, which they took into halftime. Mauldin got another penalty kick opportunity at the eighteen-minute mark of the second half but Bulldogs goalie Diego Martinez made an amazing save to keep the match close, one of his ten saves in the match. The Bulldogs got numerous shots at the goal but could never find the back of the net as each opportunity just sailed wide of the goal. While the season didn't end the way the Bulldogs wanted it to, Coach Underwood says the Bulldogs have a lot to look forward to as they were a young team this season. "The future is bright for the program as this in theory would have been considered a rebuilding year," said Underwood. "Next year will be another great year and we'll continue to build from there, we're going to be here every single year."
