On Monday the Chesnee Eagles held their third annual Eagle Invitational at Meadowbrook Golf Club with a field that included the only two 5A golf state champions in the state’s history.
“We have a great mix of teams up here today including Boiling Springs and Gaffney who are always at the top of 5A plus Chapman and Mid-Carolina who are always strong in 3A,” said Chesnee head coach Andy Pitt. “We have teams that don’t always see each other in competition and it will get the teams ready for the upcoming championships.” Boiling Springs Zach Phillips won medalist honors for the tournament as he was the only golfer to finish under par in the tournament finishing the day with s score of 71. The Bulldogs as a team finished in third place with an overall score of 318 and seven shots behind tournament champions Gaffney. The host Chesnee Eagles finished in second place overall one shot ahead of Boiling Springs and six shots behind Gaffney. The Eagles were led by Coleton Bridges who finished second overall with a 73 and Gerrit Cooper who finished tied for third with a score of 74. Both Bridges and Cooper were named to the All-Tournament team. Coach Pitt was very happy with his team's performance at the tournament on Monday. "Having Boiling Springs and Gaffney here is a good measuring stick for us," said Coach Pitt. "Our guys played well on the front nine and backed that up by coming in and playing just as well on the back nine." The rest of the All-Tournament team consisted of Seth Taylor (74) and Ryker Ward ((76), of Gaffney plus PJ Jacbos (77) from Mid-Carolina. The top three were trailed in order by Mid-Carolina, Broome, Chapman, Greer, Landrum, and Greer Middle College. Boiling Springs, Gaffney, Chapman, Landrum, Broome, and Chesnee will all be meeting again next week at Woodfin Ridge as they take part in the Spartanburg County tournament on April 24. Chapman, Broome, and Chesnee will be returning to Meadowbrook Golf Club in a few weeks as it will be the host site of the region championship. On Monday night the Boiling Springs Bulldogs soccer team honored eleven seniors before their 3-2 victory over Byrnes and it was one of those eleven that gave the Bulldogs the decisive goal.
"As seniors this is one of the last times they'll be able to play in this stadium," said Boiling Springs head coach Nathan Robbins. "They're focused on our path to the playoffs but they know getting this win on senior night helps with that path." The Bulldogs and Rebels battled throughout the first half with Boiling Springs getting many looks at the Byrnes goal but it was the Rebels that would grab the first lead as a Rebels player shot the ball from just inside the right side of the penalty box to give Byrnes a 1-0 lead with fifteen minutes left in the first half. Byrnes fended off more Bulldogs attacks over the last fifteen minutes of the half to hold on to the 1-0 halftime lead. "Our crux all season has been finishing the ball," said Coach Robbins. "This is the most goals we've scored all season and all week we've been practicing on finishing in key situations. Clearly it paid off tonight." In the second half Boiling Springs didn't waste much time getting on the board as Zach Plummer found the back of the net off a set kick just outside the penalty box to tie the game at 1-1 just two minutes into the second half. The Bulldogs kept up the second half pressure as just four minutes later Ethan Weathersby made a cross that found Christian Gonzalez who headed the ball into the bottom left corner of the net giving Boiling Springs a 2-1 lead with a little over thirty minutes to play in the half. As time ticked away in the second half the Rebels were still trailing but soon evened up the score when Merrick Morehead broke through the middle of the Bulldogs defense and found the back of the net to tie the game a 2-2 with just under ten minutes left in the game. With it being senior night for the Bulldogs it was only fitting that a senior would make the final score of the game and that's just what happened when Trevor Bertha made a move on a Byrnes defender with just over two minutes left in the game finding the left side of the net on a strong right footed kick giving the Bulldogs a 3-2 victory over Byrnes. The victory was a key win for the Bulldogs soccer team on their path for the playoffs. "We're in a situation where we need to win every game going forward," said Coach Robbins. "We're treating each game for the rest of the season as a must win." The Bulldogs will journey outside of region play for their next two games as they host Chapman on Tuesday night and then travel to Chesnee on Thursday for the first ever matchup between the two District Two schools in soccer. With the regular season starting to wind down every region game becomes important and the Boiling Springs Bulldogs softball team took advantage of their opportunity with a 4-2 at Hillcrest on Friday night.
The Bulldogs got the game started with a double by Samy Quintero and she later came around to score on a double to left field by Grace McKinney to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead. Boiling Springs kept the scoring going in the second inning when Jaycie Osment hit a double of her own to left field with two outs and then was followed by Olivia Hall who hit a homerun to left field to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead after two innings. In the bottom of the third inning Hillcrest was able to add a run to put the Bulldogs lead at 3-1. In the top of the fifth inning Boiling Springs Ragan Bristol doubled to centerfield before coming around to score on a McKinney single to right field giving the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead before the Rams tacked on another run in the bottom half of the inning. Boiling Springs had five different players get hits on Friday night with Grace McKinney getting two hits while driving in two runs for the Bulldogs. Besides her home run in the game Olivia Hall also had a good night pitching for the Bulldogs as she pitched seven innings and struck out six batters. The Bulldogs will return to action in a pivotal region matchup against Byrnes on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs baseball and softball teams will both be hosting Byrnes on Tuesday night as it is Little League Night at the park. The Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs soccer team fell behind early in the game but rallied to grab a 2-1 victory over Hillcrest in a key region matchup on Thursday night.
"It was another good region win," said Bulldogs head coach Jonathan Burnett. "With all the rainouts lately just being able to get back and get a win is nice. We have a busy week next week against Byrnes, Spartanburg, and Dorman so we'll look to carry the momentum from tonight into those games next week." Hillcrest was able to take an early lead when Isabella Vincent found the back of the net on a shot from the top of the penalty box to give the Rams a 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the game. Boiling Springs answered the Rams score with just over eighteen minutes left in the half when junior Elainee Sprinkle took a left footed shot for forty yards from the left side of the field that lofted over the goalie's head and found the top left corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Coach Burnett said that Sprinkle has really been putting in a lot of effort to develop just a great left footed shot. "She has been working on her shot all season and has really developed her left foot shot ," said Coach Burnett. "I remember yelling out for her to shoot it and she did just that. It was a nice shot that ended up finding the back of the net." After Sprinkle's score the Bulldogs and Rams battled to a 1-1 tie at halftime. In the second half Boiling Springs took a cue from the Rams and scored early as Sami Ewing dribbled pass multiple defenders finding the top left corner of the net on another nice left footed shot to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs were able to keep the lead as they got great defense over the last thirty minutes of the game from their backline and a solid performance from goalkeeper Cora Brendle who had twelve saves. "I think there is a lot of fight in this team and you saw that tonight," said Coach Burnett. "We've seen it several times this season where this team will get down early but they've been able to fight their way back. Our message at halftime was for them not to get frustrated but to keep playing our game." The Bulldogs improved their region record to 6-3 with the victory and they will have a busy week next week as they travel to Byrnes on Monday, Spartanburg on Wednesday, and will host Dorman on Thursday night. "We have a busy week next week," said Coach Burnett. "We'll see where we are next Thursday night." Boiling Springs got a great performance from senior captain Jonathan Niebles on Tuesday night in a 2-1 victory over region foe Spartanburg in a game that was pushed back from Monday night due to rain.
"We've had a tough region schedule so far but this is a good way to start out the second half of region play," said Bulldogs head coach Nathan Robbins. The Bulldogs and Vikings both had good opportunities to score in the first half but neither team was able to find the goal but the Vikings had a great play spoiled by Niebles. With just over ten minutes to go in the first half Boiling Springs goalkeeper Jason Murray made a great save on a Vikings shot but the ball slipped away to a Vikings player who took another shot on an empty goal and just before the ball reached the goal Niebles made a sliding save to keep the ball out of the net keeping the game tied 0-0. The first half ended in a 0-0 tie. In the second half the Bulldogs got on board just seven minutes into the half when freshman Christian Gonzalez made his way up the right goal line before taking a shot that ricocheted off the right post and found the back of the net. Just under five minutes later the Bulldogs struck again when Niebles found the back of the net on a shot at the top of the penalty box to give Boiling Springs a 2-0 lead. "Jonathan is our senior captain and we expect a lot out of him," said Coach Robbins. "We can ask him to play anywhere on the field and he did that tonight. He done a little bit of everything tonight and led us to victory." Spartanburg was able to get their first goal of the game with just over five minutes left in the game when Colton Pereyo found the top left part of the goal on a set piece from just outside the right penalty box. Despite the late goal Boiling Springs got a strong performance from junior goalkeeper Jason Murray who was making only his second career start registering eleven saves for the Bulldogs. "Jason was given the start tonight and he kept a clean sheet most of the night," said Coach Robbins. "Our backline and goalkeeper just really kept us in the game tonight." The Bulldogs will look to carry on the momentum from Tuesday nights win into their game at Hillcrest on Thursday night. |
