Boiling Springs got a great performance from senior captain Jonathan Niebles on Tuesday night in a 2-1 victory over region foe Spartanburg in a game that was pushed back from Monday night due to rain.
"We've had a tough region schedule so far but this is a good way to start out the second half of region play," said Bulldogs head coach Nathan Robbins. The Bulldogs and Vikings both had good opportunities to score in the first half but neither team was able to find the goal but the Vikings had a great play spoiled by Niebles. With just over ten minutes to go in the first half Boiling Springs goalkeeper Jason Murray made a great save on a Vikings shot but the ball slipped away to a Vikings player who took another shot on an empty goal and just before the ball reached the goal Niebles made a sliding save to keep the ball out of the net keeping the game tied 0-0. The first half ended in a 0-0 tie. In the second half the Bulldogs got on board just seven minutes into the half when freshman Christian Gonzalez made his way up the right goal line before taking a shot that ricocheted off the right post and found the back of the net. Just under five minutes later the Bulldogs struck again when Niebles found the back of the net on a shot at the top of the penalty box to give Boiling Springs a 2-0 lead. "Jonathan is our senior captain and we expect a lot out of him," said Coach Robbins. "We can ask him to play anywhere on the field and he did that tonight. He done a little bit of everything tonight and led us to victory." Spartanburg was able to get their first goal of the game with just over five minutes left in the game when Colton Pereyo found the top left part of the goal on a set piece from just outside the right penalty box. Despite the late goal Boiling Springs got a strong performance from junior goalkeeper Jason Murray who was making only his second career start registering eleven saves for the Bulldogs. "Jason was given the start tonight and he kept a clean sheet most of the night," said Coach Robbins. "Our backline and goalkeeper just really kept us in the game tonight." The Bulldogs will look to carry on the momentum from Tuesday nights win into their game at Hillcrest on Thursday night. Comments are closed.
