The Woodruff Wolverines used a dominant 1st quarter to down the Chesnee Eagles 73-61 in a matchup of county rivals on Friday night. The Wolverines opened the game on a 13-2 run and never looked back as Omarion McKelvin scored six of his eleven points on the night during the run. Chesnee Head Coach Andy Pitt was disappointed in his team's start to the game. "We didn't come out with a lot energy at the start, and Woodruff's MO is that they are going to come out and play hard," Pitt said. "We didn't match their intensity early on and they had some jumpers go in which fed Woodruff's confidence. Chesnee was able to claw back into by outscoring the Wolverines 24-16 in the second quarter to cut the Wolverines lead to seven as Ahmad Smith hit a three pointer at the buzzer for the Eagles. The Wolverines responded with a 9-0 run to start the third quarter to pull away from the Eagles as they led 55-43 at the end of the quarter. The Eagles were able to cut the Wolverines lead to eight early in the fourth quarter but a 7-0 run for the Wolverines ended the Eagles chances for a comeback. Ahmad Smith led all scorers with 25 points while Dez Tate also added 20 points for the Eagles. Smith had a huge first half as the Wolverines were keying defensively on Tate and Alijah Means. Coach Pitt was pleased to see Smith take advantage of the opportunity. “It was their game plan to come out and shut Dez down, and they tried to lock down on Alijah too." Pitt said "that opened up things for Ahmad and he did what we needed to do as far as taking advantage of his opportunities." Marquel Evins led the Wolverines with 14 points. Marcellas Dial added 13 points while Omarion McKelvin and Jonathan West both added 11 points each for Woodruff. The Eagles will return to action on Thursday in the opening round of the Lowe's Roundball Classic as the take on Fort Mill at 8:30pm. Girl's Game The Woodruff Lady Wolverines used a big first quarter to down the Chesnee Lady Eagles 53-27 on Friday evening as Woodruff opened the game on a 12-2 run and led 16-6 after the first quarter of play.
The Lady Eagles fought back in the game in the second quarter as they were able to stay with the Lady Wolverines until late in the third when the Lady Wolverines were able to go on a 10-2 run to put away the Lady Eagles. Chesnee Head Coach Carey Burns was pleased with her team's play in the second and third quarters but was disappointed her team couldn't put together a solid four quarters. "We need four good quarters not just two. I'm proud of how we played in the second and third quarters but we need to be consistent for a full game," Burns said Sierra Bowen led the Lady Eagles in scoring with twelve points while Abbey Ray also added six points on Friday night. Coach Burns was proud of Bowen's effort. "Sierra is a leader on the court," said Coach Burns. "She is who the team looks to for consistency." Zavia Jeter led the Lady Wolverines with 15 points including 10 in the first half while Brooke Bailey added 13 points on Friday night. The Lady Eagles will return to action on Thursday in the opening round of the Lowe's Roundball Classic as they take on Laurens Academy at 10am. Comments are closed.
