The Chesnee Lady Eagles defeated the St Joseph's Lady Knights on Friday night to clinch the #4 seed in the playoffs with a 41-38 win at Landrum High School.
The Lady Eagles faced a difficult situation shortly before leaving for the game as Head Coach Carey Burns became ill and was unable to travel with the team. Acting Head Coach Chandler Turner was proud of how the Lady Eagles handled the situation, "They came together as a team and stayed focused. We all had to work together, including me and Coach (Wes) Dove to accomplish our goal." The Chesnee Lady Eagles got off to a fast start as they led 9-1 after the 1st quarter behind 5 1st quarter points from Carley Hammett. The Lady Knights used a 6-0 run to open the 2nd quarter, but the Eagles were able to maintain their lead and led 18-16 at the half. Guillana Fajardo made a 3 pointer to open the 3rd quarter to give the Lady Knights their only lead of the game. Abbey Ray was able to quickly give the Lady Eagles the lead back, and the Lady Eagles never trailed the rest of the game. The Lady Knights were able to tie the game up behind another three from Fajardo, but Whitney Haulbrooks made a fast break layup with 2:20 left in the 3rd quarter to put the Lady Eagles in front for good. The Lady Eagles were able to open the 4th quarter on a 11-5 run to lead 41-29 with under 2 minutes to play. The Lady Knights closed the game on a 9-0 run but the Lady Eagles were able to hold on for the win. Abbey Ray led the Eagles with 11 points while Carley Hammett scored 8 points for the Lady Eagles and Sierra Bowen added 7 points. Paige Scruggs and Shenan Bishop scored 7 of the Lady Eagles final 13 points. Scruggs scored 6 points in the game and Bishop added 5 points. Maddy Duwe scored 10 points to lead the Lady Knights, and Brittany Morris added 7 points. This was a huge win for a Lady Eagles squad that has no seniors on the roster. This is the first time since 2015 that the Lady Eagles have made the Playoffs. Acting Head Coach Chandler Turner was happy the Lady Eagles could reach their goal of making the playoffs, "it's nice, I'm excited for the girls. They get to do something they've always wanted to do and get to the next level." The Chesnee Lady Eagles will travel to the region 2-2A champion on Tuesday in the opening round of the playoffs. Southside Christian is the likely opponent, and the time is TBD. Comments are closed.
