On Saturday afternoon the 82nd annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas at Gibbs Stadium ended in a 10-10 tie and it’s only the fifth time in the history of the game that it has ended that way. With the tie the South Carolina team snaps a three year losing streak in the series.
With North Carolina leading 10-7 with just over two minutes to go in the game the South Carolina team was faced with a fourth down decision on the North Carolina seven yard line. South Carolina head coach Jackie Hayes elected to kick a 25-yd field goal to tie the game. One of the main reasons the game ended in a tie was the outstanding play of both defenses and two members of the South Carolina defense were Boiling Springs’ linebackers Michael McDowell and Logan Billings. Billings and McDowell, who are both committed to play football at The Citadel, both recorded two tackles a piece in the game. They both said that the opportunity to play in the Shrine Bowl was a special opportunity and it was great that they both got to finish their high school careers together. "It was just a great experience overall getting to play in the Shrine Bowl," said McDowell. "Everyone knows what a profound honor it is to get to play in this game and to get around great players like this it was just really an amazing experience." "With both us playing college ball together next year today really felt like a mixture of our last high school game and our first college game all at the same time," said Billings. "It was a really great experience and I'm just looking towards the future." Both players were happy to end their high school careers on a field that they were very familiar with during their years at Boiling Springs. "We never lost in our career on this field and I guess with this tie we kept it that way." said McDowell. At halftime of the game the Shrine Bowl announced that they had raised $1,541,320.18 that will be donated to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children. Comments are closed.
