With the home crowd celebrating homecoming on Friday night the Bulldogs defense had one of their best performances of the season as they helped lead Boiling Springs to a 16-6 victory over the visiting Mauldin Mavericks. The Bulldogs defense only allowed the Mavericks offense one-hundred and fifty one yards while forcing four turnovers.
"I think we got them out of what they were trying to do," said Bulldogs head coach Rick Tate. "I'm really proud of our guys, we gave up big scores two weeks in a row and it would have been easy for these guys to quit but they've came back and fought hard." The first half was a back and forth affair between the two teams but the Boiling Springs offense was on its way into the end zone with just over two minutes to go in the half when Mauldin's Devon Scott forced a Boiling Springs fumble that was returned ninety-eight yards for a touchdown by Elias Garza to give the Mavericks a 6-0 halftime lead. The Bulldogs almost took the lead at halftime but a ninety-six yard interception return for a touchdown by Dre Pinckney was called back for a block in the back on the return. When the second half started the Bulldogs defense forced a three-and-out by the Mavericks and on fourth down Mauldin mishandled the snap and it was recovered by Boiling Springs' Moffett Graves at the Mauldin sixteen yard line. After the fumble recovery the Bulldogs cashed in on the turnover when quarterback Aaron Thomas ran the ball in from one yard out giving Boiling Springs a 7-6 lead at the end of the third quarter. At the start of the fourth quarter the Mavericks were able to move the ball to the Boiling Springs thirty-five yard line but that drive was soon ended when the Bulldogs defense forced another Mavericks fumble that was recovered by Moffett Graves again this time for a sixty-one yard return to the Mauldin six yard line. The Boiling Springs offense capitalized on the turnover on the very next play when running back Charles McFadden Jr ran the ball in from six yards out to give the Bulldogs a 14-6 lead. The Bulldogs defense soon added two more points of their own when they forced an intentional grounding penalty by the Mauldin quarterback that was in the end zone resulting in a safety and a 16-6 Boiling Springs lead. The game was ended with another great defensive play as Dre Pinckney intercepted his second pass of the game to help seal the Bulldogs victory. "We played more together as a team last week and it just carried over to this week," said Coach Tate. "I'm just really proud of these kids." The Bulldogs are now 2-1 in region play and will look to improve on that record next week as they travel to Spartanburg who lost to Dorman 34-33 on Friday night. Comments are closed.
