With a playoff spot on the line along with a chance at a region championship at the end of the week, the Boiling Springs baseball team used a strong performance from junior Tristan Smith to get the week started right defeating Gaffney 12-1 on Monday night.
Boiling Springs didn't waste time getting on the scoreboard on Monday night as Davis Starnes worked a walk to start the game before coming around to score on a homerun to left centerfield by Tristan Smith that ricocheted off the Gaffney scoreboard to put the Bulldogs up 2-0 after the second at-bat. Holmes followed Smith with a single before coming around to score on a two-run homer by Bulldogs senior catcher Vance Wagner to put Boiling Springs up 4-0 at the end of the first inning as the Bulldogs batted through their lineup. "We got a leadoff walk and then Tristan hit one off the scoreboard which gave us a lot of confidence to start the game," said Bulldogs head coach Jeff Lipscomb. "We got a lot of quality at-bats tonight as Vance and Holmes both got homeruns as well. We swung the bats really well tonight." In the bottom of the first inning Smith went to work on the mound picking up all three outs in the inning via strikeouts including the last two after Gaffney was able to get runners to second and third off a walk and an error. The Boiling Springs bats didn't cool off when they entered the second inning as they scored five runs to push the Bulldogs lead to 9-0 after two innings. Their inning got started when Starnes and Smith reached base after being hit by pitches before Will Holmes loaded the bases with a single. With the bases loaded Starnes came around to score when Jamison Bagwell became the third Bulldogs batter to be hit by a pitch in the inning making the Bulldogs lead 5-0 and they extended the lead to 7-0 on a single by Hudson Wilson that scored both Smith and Holmes. Jackson Reel gave the Bulldogs five runs in the inning when he hit a two out single that scored both Bagwell and Wilson to put the Boiling Springs lead at 9-0. In the top of the third inning Boiling Springs pushed their lead to 12-0 which was started when Tristan Smith was hit by pitch for the second straight at-bat before coming home to score on a towering two-run homer to right field by Will Holmes. Wagner added another run when he scored on a double to right field by Wilson, after reaching base on a single of his own. While the Bulldogs bats were busy at the plate, Tristan Smith was busy not allowing the Gaffney batters very many opportunities when they came to the plate. Smith pitched all five innings on Monday night striking out eleven batters while only allowing three walks, two hits, and one run. "Tonight was probably Tristan's best night pitching this year," said Lipscomb. "He went all five innings and threw some big strikes tonight." With the win the Bulldogs lock up a spot in the 5A playoffs and Lipscomb said he was proud of how his team came out on Monday night. "I watched our guys move around today and they were loose and focused while me being the old ball coach was nervous knowing we had to win at least one this week," said Lipscomb. "Our guys were focused from the start and that says a lot about our seniors because those guys lead us and set the tone." Boiling Springs will host Gaffney on Wednesday night for senior night as they honor seven seniors. The senior night festivities will began at 6:15 PM with the game following at 6:30 PM.
