At halftime the Boiling Springs Bulldogs looked to be on their way to a victory over rival Chapman on Friday night but a second half that saw the Panthers score thirty-four unanswered points sent the Bulldogs home with a 55-28 loss.
"We just had too many mistakes there in that second half," said Bulldogs head coach Rick Tate. "You can't have a bunch of mistakes and expect to beat a good team like Chapman." While the Bulldogs struggled in the second half, the first half was quite a different story. The Bulldogs got on the board first when quarterback Aaron Thomas connected on a thirty-four yard touchdown pass to Reggie Crocker to give Boiling a 7-0 lead with nine minutes left in the first quarter. Chapman answered back on the following drive as quarterback Mikele Colasurdo ran the ball in from ten yards out to tie the game at 7-7. Boiling Springs answered right back on their next drive as sophomore running back Charles McFadden capped the Bulldogs drive with a seven yard touchdown run to put his team back ahead 14-7 with just under four minutes left in the first half. Colasurdo would strike again for the Panthers though as he found wide receiver Ben Rollins on a thirty-four yard touchdown pass to make the score 14-14 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter the Bulldogs didn't waste much time adding to the scoreboard as Thomas found senior wide receiver Davis Brown on a fifteen yard touchdown pass to put the Boiling Springs lead at 21-14 with ten minutes still to go in the half. The Panthers would score again when Colasurdo connected with Rollins for the second time this time on a seventy-seven yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 21-21 with six minutes left in the half. The Bulldogs took a lead to halftime when Thomas found Brown again for their second touchdown connection of the night this time on a twenty-one yard pass to give Boiling Springs a 28-21 lead. In the second half the tables turned for the Bulldogs as the Panthers held the ball for the first seven minutes of the third quarter and tied the game on an eleven yard touchdown run by Dante Smith. That was soon followed by the Bulldogs first mistake on offense as the Panthers Jayla Pearson intercepted a Bulldogs pass and returned it eighty-one yards to give Chapman a 35-28 lead at the end of the third quarter. Smith would find the end zone again for the Panthers when he rushed in from one yard out on fourth and goal to give Chapman a 42-28 lead with nine minutes to go in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs tried to get some offense going late in the fourth quarter only to have it derailed by penalties. Chapman would add two scores with under two minutes to go in the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 55-28 and come away with a victory over the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs will look to rebound next week as they host their first home game of the season on their brand new turf field against Dutch Fork who defeated Irmo 58-0 on Friday night.
