Byrnes used a big first quarter to defeat the Boiling Springs Bulldogs 73-41 in the first matchup in the new year for both teams. The Rebels used a 20-4 run in the first quarter to give themselves an early advantage that Boiling Springs was never able to overcome on Friday night. "That first quarter run that we got was really the difference because outside of that it was pretty even," said Byrnes head coach Layne Fowler. "I know that group is a well coached team so that was big for us to get that early advantage.” Byrnes was led in the first quarter by Nick Thiele, NaNa Burris, and Dustin Gillum who all combined to score seventeen of the Rebels twenty first quarter points. The Rebels added to their first quarter performance with another impressive performance in the second quarter as they outscored the Bulldogs 21-8 on their way to a 41-12 halftime lead which was led by Dessie Canty who scored eight of his game high seventeen points in the quarter. "With coming off the holiday break I was really proud of how our team came out and performed tonight," said Fowler. "Dessie has been really good for us especially lately. He scored thirty-six for us in the recent holiday tournament and I think he's just scratching the surface of what kind of player he can be in his career." The second half was pretty even between the two teams as the Rebels outscored the Bulldogs 32-29 and with their first half lead allowed Byrnes to grab their first region win in the new year. The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Khalil Brown, who was named All-Tournament at the Chesnee Roundball Classic earlier this week, as he scored thirteen points on Friday night. Brown wasn't the only Bulldogs player to finish in double figures as Cam Earls also scored ten points on Friday night. Boiling Springs will return to action on Tuesday night as they host another region matchup against the Mauldin Mavericks.
