On Monday night the high school softball season officially started and while that comes with a lot of excitement on its own, the Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs decided to add a little excitement to the start of the season as they scored six runs over the last three innings of the game to rally for a 6-4 win over the Blue Ridge Tigers.
While both teams were unable to score a run in the first two innings, Blue Ridge scored four runs in the third inning on three hits. The inning started when Kinsleigh Cothran doubled and was followed by a single from Baylie King. After the Bulldogs were able to get a strikeout, Cothran and King both scored for the Tigers on a Bulldogs error while Jessica Clark was able to reach base. The Tigers scored two more runs in the third on a groundout to second and a single by Sydney Underwood. After being unable to respond in the bottom of the third inning the Lady Bulldogs finally got the bats going in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out in the inning, Emily Hill was walked to give Boiling Springs its first base runner since the first inning. Hill advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Olivia Hall and then came home to score on a double by Natalie Hazzard giving the Bulldogs their first run of the game. Hazzard then scored on a single by Regan Bristol and the Bulldogs cut the Blue Ridge lead to 4-2 at the end of the fourth inning. In the fifth inning the Bulldogs cut the lead to 4-3 after Abbey Threatt doubled and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Grace McKinney but the Bulldogs saved the real excitement for their last at bats. After holding the Tigers scoreless in the top of the sixth inning the Bulldogs went to work at the plate. Hall got the rally going as she reached base on a single and Hazzard followed by reaching base on a Blue Ridge error. Bristol loaded the bases on a single to centerfield as the Bulldogs trailed 4-3 with one out in the inning. With the bases loaded and Threatt at the plate for the Bulldogs, Hall was able to steal home and tie the game at 4-4. After the Bulldogs were able to tie the game Threatt doubled to right centerfield allowing Hazzard and Bristol to score and give the Bulldogs a 6-4 lead. In the top of the seventh the Lady Bulldogs were able to finish the rally when McKinney caught a third out pop fly to third base giving Boiling Springs a 6-4 victory. After the game Boiling Springs head softball coach Randy Piazza had this to say about his team's victory, "We were able to overcome some adversity there and come back and grab the victory." When asked about the call to steal home to tie the game he added, "I felt like right there we just needed to make something happen and it worked out." The Lady Bulldogs will travel to Fort Mill on Wednesday night and will be back at home on Thursday to host Chapman before tp the Crescent Tournament this weekend. Comments are closed.
