The Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs softball opened region play on Tuesday night at Dorman and escaped with a thrilling 5-4 victory after trailing 4-3 heading into the top of the seventh inning.
The Bulldogs got on the board first when Olivia Hall singled in Emily Hill, who had reached on a single of her own, to give Boiling Springs a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. While the Bulldogs were able to force the Cavaliers to go one-two-three in the first inning it was the second inning that gave the Bulldogs trouble. After Grace Lee and Brianna Greene were able to reach base with out in the bottom of the second inning, the Cavaliers were able to grab the lead when Grayce Black hit a three run home run giving the Cavaliers a 3-1 lead. The Bulldogs were able to cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth inning when Zoey Stewart scored on a double by Lindsey Edge. In the bottom of the fifth inning the Cavaliers added to their lead when Jack Bush singled in Caroline Darwin who had doubled prior to Bush's at-bat to give Dorman a 4-2 lead. The top of the sixth inning saw the Bulldogs close the lead to 4-3 when Grace McKinney singled in Edge. In the top of the seventh inning the Bulldogs were able to get Olivia Hall and Tori Beland on base with singles and both were sitting on second and third with two outs with Lindsey Edge coming to the plate. With the game on the line Edge was able to hit a ball to centerfield that was unable to be caught by the Dorman fielder allowing Hall and Beland to score and giving Boiling Springs it's first lead since the first inning at 5-4. The Bulldogs were able to keep the Cavaliers from scoring in the bottom of the seventh to propel the Bulldogs to their first region win of the season. "I'm really proud of how our girls battled back tonight and were able to capture the victory," said Bulldogs head coach Randy Piazza, "It's always nice to be able to get that first region win especially against a good team like this." The Bulldogs softball team will return to action on Thursday night as they travel to Byrnes for another region contest. Comments are closed.
