The Mauldin Mavericks used a three goal second half to capture a 3-0 victory over the Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs soccer team on Thursday night in a Region II-5A matchup. The game on Thursday was a battle between the current third and fourth place teams in the region.
"It was a tough loss but all the credit to Mauldin," said Bulldogs head coach Jonathan Burnett. "We didn't have some things go our way tonight but we'll dust ourselves off during the spring break and get back to work on Friday." The two teams battled throughout the first half as it seemed both teams were determined to not let the other team have any sort of advantage as they battled to a 0-0 tie at halftime. In the second half Mauldin got on the board when forward Zoe Leavitt found the bottom left corner of the net off a cross from another Mavericks player to give Mauldin a 1-0 lead just eight minutes into the new half. Just eight minutes later the Mavericks added another score when midfielder Laynie Frazier scored from twenty yards out on a shot from the right side of the field that found the top left corner of the goal just outside the reach of the Bulldogs goalkeeper to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead. With ten minutes to go in the game Mauldin was able to add to their lead when Ava Weston found the back of the net on a break away to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead and the victory. "After they got that first goal I think it just kind of lifted them," said Coach Burnett. "We tried to respond but they're a good team and were able to get it done better than we were tonight." Coach Burnett said that despite the loss he was still proud of the effort from his team tonight. "Our girls played their heart out tonight," said Coach Burnett. "I feel like they left it out on the field tonight but we just came up short tonight and sports are just like that sometimes." The Bulldogs will be back in action after Spring Break when they travel to Spartanburg on April 8th at 7:00 PM. Comments are closed.
