As a cold front welcomed the people of upstate South Carolina to April on Thursday evening, Will Holmes had a similar welcoming to the Nation Ford bats at Bulldogs Park on Thursday night as the Bulldogs defeated the Falcons 2-1 to win the region series between the two teams.
Boiling Springs made quick work of the Falcons in the top of the first inning as they allowed a walk to the leadoff batter before getting an out on a sacrifice bunt and then getting a great double play that started on a line drive to third baseman Davis Starnes before doubling off the leadoff batter at second base. After a strong start in the top of the first inning the Bulldogs didn't waste time taking advantage of their momentum in the bottom of the first inning. Starnes started the Boiling Springs side of the first inning with a single to the right side of the field and advancing to second base on a Falcons error to put himself in scoring position for the Bulldogs. Tristan Smith followed Starnes with a single to left field allowing Starnes to come around to score and give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead after the first inning. In the top of the second inning the Falcons scored their only run of the game when Justin Lehman reached base on a walk, stole second and third base, before coming around to score on a Bulldogs error to tie the game at 1-1. While the Falcons were able to score a run on an error, Bulldogs pitcher Will Holmes still hadn't allowed a hit and that's a trend he continued throughout his five and two thirds innings he pitched. Holmes finished the game in the sixth inning with two outs not allowing a hit while striking out twelve Nation Ford batters. After both teams were held quiet through the middle part of the game, the Bulldogs gave Holmes the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning behind some patient at-bats and a Falcons error. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning Tristan Smith worked a walk before advancing to second on a Falcons error to put two Bulldogs runners on base. With Smith on second base, after the error that also saw Holmes also reach base, Smith advanced to third on a passed ball before coming around to score on a single by Jamison Bagwell to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1 over the Falcons. Carter Sloand, who has been pitching well in relief for the Bulldogs, came on in the bottom of the sixth inning to take over for Holmes. Sloand continued his impressive pitching for Boiling Springs picking up the save over one and a third innings while also striking out a Falcons batter. Aaron Pendergast picked up the only hit for Nation Ford in the top of the seventh inning with one out on a double to left centerfield before Sloand retired the rest of the Falcons batters. With the win Boiling Springs improves to 6-6 overall and 4-2 in region play as they get ready to enter spring break but the Bulldogs still have two more games before that break arrives. The Bulldogs will return to action on Monday in a home doubleheader against Union County with the first game scheduled to start at 1:00 PM and the second game to follow at 4:00 PM.
