INMAN, SC - Boiling Springs senior pitcher Landon Ellis got his team out to a strong start in the first game of the Steve Sanders Tournament as they defeated St. Joseph's 13-1 on Friday night at Chapman High School in six innings.
"Landon was good for us tonight and brought some senior leadership," said Bulldogs head coach Landon Ellis. "He's going to be a good player for us this year and throws a lot of great off-speed stuff. As a team we just done exactly what we needed to come away with the victory." Ellis had a great night on the mound for the Bulldogs going four innings while facing while striking out five and allowing only one run on two hits, facing just fourteen batters in his four innings of work. With the Bulldogs being the away team, they took to the plate first and after working the first two hitters, Luke Compton and Hudson Wilson, worked walks they got their first run of the game when senior Tristan Smith hit a double to the left field wall scoring Compton to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. Wilson later came around to score on a groundout by Jackson Cole to put the Bulldogs up 2-0 when the top of the inning came to an end. In the top of the second inning Bulldogs senior catcher Brent Fowler started the inning off by working an early 0-2 count into a walk. Rylee Douglas came on to pinch run for Fowler where he advanced to second on a balk before stealing third base. Douglas made the Bulldogs lead 3-0 when he scored on a groundout to second base by Luke Compton. Tristan Smith led off the third inning with a single to left centerfield before coming around to score on a triple to right centerfield by Jackson Reel giving the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead. Reel made the lead 5-0 when he scored on a single to centerfield by Jackson Cole as the Bulldogs continued to extend their lead. After going scoreless in the fourth inning, the Bulldogs got back on the board when Davis Starnes led off the fifth inning with a walk before advancing to second and third on back-to-back steals. He later scored on a wild pitch to push the Boiling Springs lead to 6-1, as St. Joseph's scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. The sixth inning saw the Bulldogs bust the game wide open as they scored seven runs in the frame while batting around the lineup. The inning got started when Hudson Wilson singled to right field before advancing to third on a double down the right field line by Tristan Smith. Davis Starnes followed Smith with a walk to load the bases for the Bulldogs. With the bases loaded Jackson Reel, Jackson Cole, and Ashton Smith were all able to work walks on the next three at-bats to push the Bulldogs lead to 9-1 with no one out. On the next at-bat the Bulldogs they hit into a double play, but it still allowed Jackson Reel to score and extend the Boiling Springs lead to 10-1. Now with two outs and Jackson Cole at third base, Jackson Kostiuk came on to pinch hit for Richie Lewis and hit a double to right centerfield scoring Cole to give the Bulldogs an 11-1 lead. Luke Compton followed Kostiuk with a walk before both advanced on a wild pitch and eventually coming around to score on a double down the left field line by Hudson Wilson to make the Bulldogs lead 13-1 over St. Joseph's. While Ellis had a great night on the mound to start the game, the Bulldogs also got two strong relief pitching efforts from Corben Childers and Chansen Cole who combined for two scoreless innings of relief as Childers added two strikeouts and Cole added one more. Boiling Springs will get back to work on Saturday as they face Hillcrest at 11:30 AM before facing off against Chapman at 4:30 PM. Both games will be held at Chapman High School before the tournament shifts to Duncan Park in Spartanburg on Monday and Tuesday. Comments are closed.
