LANDRUM, SC - After struggling to get much offense going in the early parts of the game the Boiling Springs basketball team saw themselves close on an impressive 34-17 run over the final two periods of play to claim a 60-53 victory over Spartanburg Christian Academy in the first round of the 2021 Battle of the Border tournament held at Landrum High School.
Boiling Springs led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter and even held a 16-15 lead three minutes into the second quarter. At the 4:51 mark though the Warriors Lathan Moss hit two free throws to give SCA their first lead at 17-16 over the Bulldogs, as the free throws also started a 12-3 run to end the quarter for the Warriors that saw them take a 27-19 lead into the halftime break. The Warriors pushed their lead to 36-26 at the end of the third quarter when the Warriors' Trey McManus hit a three-pointer, which wasn't even his most important of the game, from the right side while also being fouled for a four-point play to end the quarter and make the SCA lead ten points going into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs started their run which included a big six-point quarter from Dominique Johnson as they cut into the Warriors lead. Boiling Springs was able to cut the lead to 39-37 at the four-minute mark after back-to-back steals and layups by both Charkei Singleton and Julius Camp Jr. With the Bulldogs still trailing 42-40 with just under a minute to go in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs Charkei Singleton found sophomore Landon Sprouse on the right side of the court for a three-pointer to give the Bulldogs their first lead since midway through the second quarter at 43-42. The Bulldogs Tre Locklear followed that shot with back-to-back free throws to push the Boiling Springs lead to 45-42 with eleven seconds left in the game when the Warriors taking a timeout. With time running down and Boiling Springs leading by three points, the Warriors ran a play along the left side that found Trey McManus open for a three-point shot that found the bottom of the net as time expired to send the game into overtime with both teams tied at 45-45. In overtime Dominique Johnson and Tre Locklear continued their strong play as they combined to score 11 of the Bulldogs 15 points in the overtime period to claim the victory as they also limited the Warriors to only eight points in overtime. Dominique Johnson led all scorers with 24 points, eight rebounds, and two steals while fellow Bulldogs player Tre Locklear also added 12 points, seven rebounds, and a steal on Tuesday afternoon. William Thomas led Spartanburg Christian Academy with 23 points and seven rebounds while fellow Warrior Trey McManus joined him in double figures with 14 points, three rebounds, and two steals. Boiling Springs will face Gaffney on Wednesday in the second round of the tournament at 7:00 PM while Spartanburg Christian Academy will face Woodruff in the second round at 1:00 PM on Wednesday. The Boiling Springs girls fell in the first round of the Battle at the Border tournament to Asheville High School 80-39 and were led in scoring by senior Ansley King who had 11 points on Tuesday night. Boiling Springs girls' basketball will next face Landrum at 11:30 AM on Wednesday in the silver bracket as Landrum fell to Clinton 36-33 on Tuesday night. -James McBee Comments are closed.
