In the early game on Saturday afternoon at the Chesnee Roundball Classic the Boiling Springs Bulldogs used a 30-4 run from the midway point of the first quarter to halftime to lead themselves to a 65-52 victory over the Greer Yellow Jackets. After a disappointing 71-64 loss to Blacksburg on Friday night where they couldn't overcome an early lead it was a refreshing change for the Bulldogs.
"I thought our kids responded well and I felt like we would after we practiced well this morning," said Boiling Springs head coach Hal McManus. "After they started on the 12-2 run our kids really responded well by going on that 30-4 run to end the half and we just played a lot better overall game today than we did yesterday." The early run by Greer was led by their center Jaleel Skinner seven of his team high thirteen points in the quarter and was a presence on the defensive end for the Yellow Jackets as he registered nine blocks on Saturday. After the Greer run to start the game the Bulldogs got some quality play from senior Jordan Askew who led the Boiling Springs 8-2 run to end the first quarter as he scored six of the eight points putting the Bulldogs behind only 14-10 at the end of the quarter. In the second quarter the Bulldogs used an attacking defense to force turnovers and outscore the Yellow Jackets 22-4 in the second quarter with most of those points coming from junior Cam Earls who scored nine of the team's twenty-two points. In addition to Earls the Bulldogs had six different players all score in the quarter. "During that run our kids were doing a great job of following their shots and getting second chance opportunities," said McManus. "Skinner was doing a good job for them on defense there in the post but our guys were doing a great job of finding ways to score even with that presence." At halftime the Bulldogs held a 32-18 halftime lead and they just kept the pressure on from there and a lot of that had to do with the play of junior guard Corey Johnson who after having a tough night on Friday responded with fifteen of high game high seventeen points in the second half of Saturday's game. In the third quarter the Bulldogs hit four three pointers with two of those coming from Khalil Brown who scored fourteen points in the game. While Greer got a good game from Skinner they also got a good afternoon from sophomore guard Isreal Rhodes who scored ten points with seven of those coming in the fourth quarter as the Yellow Jackets attempted to make a run of their own. While Boiling Springs was led on offense by Johnson and Brown they weren't the only players for the Bulldogs to finish in double figures as Askew also finished the day with thirteen points. The Bulldogs will face Chesnee for fourth place in the Chesnee Roundball Classic on Monday at 4:30 PM. Comments are closed.
