They say at your lowest moment you will find your strength and at the five minute mark in the third quarter the Boiling Springs Bulldogs did just that as they rallied from nine points down to capture a 66-56 victory over the Spartanburg Vikings. At the five minute mark the Bulldogs were trailing 34-27 when the bench was called for a technical foul and Uziah Dawkins sank two free throws to put Spartanburg up 36-27. The run started at that moment as the Bulldogs outscored the Vikings 14-9 over the last five minutes of the quarter to put the Bulldogs within two heading into the fourth quarter at 43-41. "Most of the time something like that doesn't help you but I think it really put a chip on our kids shoulder and they dug in and got tough," said Bulldogs head coach Hal McManus. "I'm really proud of our kids toughness tonight." It was all Boiling Springs in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs outscored Spartanburg 25-13 down the stretch. The Bulldogs fourth quarter run got started when JB Kennedy hit back to back three pointers to give Boiling Springs its first lead since the first quarter. "I really like the confidence he showed taking those shots," said Coach McManus. "That was a huge deal helping push us there on that fourth quarter run." Kennedy ended the game with fourteen points, with twelve of those points coming from behind the three point line. The Bulldogs also got a big fourth quarter from Seth Hewitt who scored twelve of his game high nineteen points in the fourth quarter, while going eight for nine from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. "You know it's great having a big man that will fight for rebounds but also is able to hit some clutch free throws down the stretch," said Coach McManus. With the victory the Bulldogs improve to 2-3 in region play and will return to action on Tuesday night as they host Dorman. Girls GameThe Boiling Springs Lady Bulldogs used a huge defensive second half to capture a 39-31 victory over the Spartanburg Vikings.
The Bulldogs got the first lead of the game at 2-0 but soon trailed 9-2 after Spartanburg went on a 9-0 run midway through the first quarter. The Bulldogs were able to score four before the end of the quarter to put the score at 9-6. The Bulldogs would get closer in the second quarter but still trailed at halftime 16-14. "We came out flat but we figured out we could up the defensive tempo and take advantage of that and that's exactly what we done," said Bulldogs head coach Dwayne Lytle. The Bulldogs outscored the Vikings 25-15 in the second half and that run was led by the multiple turnovers that Boiling Springs forced in the half. The Bulldogs were led offensively by junior Caroline Reese who had fifteen points during the Boiling Springs run after being held scoreless in the first quarter. "She was frustrated there early in the game but she came on in the second half and done what leaders do." said Coach Lytle. "She helped lead our defensive tempo and it allowed her to get her shots." The Bulldogs also got seven points from sophomore Arissa Edwards and six points from junior Julia Leso. The Vikings were led offensively by Lyndsay Days who scored eight points for Spartanburg on Friday night. With the victory the Lady Bulldogs improve their region record to 3-2 and they will return to action on Tuesday night as they host the Dorman Cavaliers. Comments are closed.
