There's an old saying that the best way to get over a loss is to just move on and the Boiling Springs softball team took that advice with authority as they defeated JL Mann 10-0 in six innings on Monday night.
"I told our girls this was a great way to bounce back," said Bulldogs head coach Randy Piazza. "I told them there was nothing we could do about what happened on Friday night but we could control what happened tonight and they did just that." After a strong first top of the first inning pitching from Bulldogs pitcher Olivia Hall, who was celebrating a birthday on Monday, that included two strikeouts the Boiling Springs bats got to work in the bottom half of the inning. AD Raines reached base on a single to centerfield on a 3-2 count and later advanced to second base on a steal to put the Bulldogs in scoring position early. With one out and Raines at second base Boiling Springs catcher Ragan Bristol hit a single to left centerfield to score the run giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Bri McAbee, who was pinch running for Bristol, came around to score on the next at-bat with Bri Stanley hit a double to right centerfield and extend the Bulldogs lead to 2-0 over the Patriots. After another scoreless top of the inning for JL Mann in the second inning, the Boiling Springs bats got to work in the bottom half of the inning as they batted through the lineup while scoring four runs. Sayde Parris started the inning for the Bulldogs with a single to left centerfield before being moved over to second on a sacrifice by Jacie Ross. Hailey Owens followed Ross with a double to right centerfield scoring Parris and giving the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. Owens came around to score on a double to left field by Olivia Hall before she came around to score herself on a single by Bristol to right field giving the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead. McAbee stole second base before coming around to score on Bri Stanley's second straight double to right centerfield pushing the Boiling Springs lead to 6-0 over the Patriots. In the top of the third inning Hailey Owens entered the game to pitch for the Bulldogs in relief of Hall pitching four scoreless innings while registering five strikeouts and only allowing three batters to reach base. "We knew we had great pitching options going into the year and anytime we can get a chance to get Olivia a rest is a good thing especially with some big games coming up," said Piazza. "Hailey came in and done a great job for us tonight." The Bulldogs bats got back to work in the bottom of the third inning as Sayde Parris reached base on an infield single before coming around to score on a double down the left field line by Jacie Ross to give Boiling Springs a 7-0 lead. After advancing to third base on a wild pitch Ross came around to score on an Owens groundout to put the Bulldogs lead at 8-0 after three innings. The score stayed the same over the next two innings until the game reached the bottom of the sixth inning when Reese Smith reached base on a single before coming around to score on a double down the right field line by Bristol to put the Bulldogs up 9-0. After Bristol reached third on a stolen base she came around to score when a Patriots player mishandled a hard hit ball off the bat of Bri Stanley to give the Bulldogs the 10-0 victory. Ragan Bristol finished the night going four for four at the plate picking up three singles and a double along with three RBIs. The performance is nothing new to Coach Piazza as he says it's something he almost just expects from his senior catcher. "Ragan has been hot at the plate all year," said Piazza. "Even in games that haven't gone our way she's hit the ball well and you couldn't ask for a better team leader." Bristol said that her success at the plate this year has just been a desire to have fun in her senior year. "I'm just having fun with it being my senior year," said Bristol. "You go into the box and you don't want to think too much you want to play for your teammates behind you. I just want to enjoy every moment since it's my last year." The Bulldogs will return to play on Tuesday night as they travel to Chesnee in a game that was originally scheduled for Wednesday night. Comments are closed.
