SPARTANBURG, SC - The Boiling Springs softball team started a new week of play in an impressive fashion as they opened region play taking a 19-8 road victory over longtime region opponent Spartanburg on Tuesday night.
Boiling Springs head softball coach Hannah McDowell was really impressed with the performance and how they've come together as a team. "The team has really come together, and we were able to utilize everyone while giving opportunities where they are due," said McDowell. "We're definitely building a family environment that is grown off support and caring for one another not just in the game but off the field as well." The Bulldogs got huge games from the pitching and catching duo of Sayde Parris and Chloe Sloand as they combined for 11 RBIs. "Chloe and Sayde commanded the game well from the pitching circle and offensively," said McDowell. "Sayde had six RBIs and Chloe had five of her own, while both had a home run." While the Bulldogs had a big night offensively, they fell behind early as they trailed 5-1 going into the third inning but then the Boiling Springs bats came to life. In the top of the third inning, the bases were loaded when Parris got her first RBI of the game when singling to left field to score Emma Wilkins, who had led off the inning with a single. As the bases were still loaded, Chloe Sloand followed Parris with a triple to right field scoring both Sydnee Spencer and Addison Wheeler (who pinch ran for Parris) to cut the Spartanburg lead to 5-4 over the Bulldogs. Sloand tied the game at 5-5 when she scored on a single to right field by Ashlyn Posey before Posey along with Chloe Osteen came around to score for the Bulldogs to take their first lead of the game at 7-5 on a single to right field of her own by Abbie Wilson. Spartanburg tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the third inning before the Bulldogs retook the lead at 8-7 when Sloand hit her second triple of the game to left field scoring Parris from first base. After the Vikings tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bulldogs offense went back to work as they outscored the Vikings 11-0 over the final three innings of the game. With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, Wilson, Wilkins, and Spencer all singled to load the bases when Parris came back to bat. Wilson scored on a wild pitch before Wilkins and Spencer scored on a single to centerfield by Parris. She added to the lead on the next at-bat when Sloand hit a home run to left field to push the Bulldogs lead to 13-8 over the Vikings. In the top of the sixth inning Myah Salters singled up the middle before scoring on a double to left field by Wilson to push the lead to 14-8. Wilson and Spencer (who worked a walk) put the lead at 17-8 on a Parris line drive home run over the centerfield fence. With one out in the top of the seventh inning with one out, Brooklyn Harrill tripled to left field before scoring on an Osteen single to left field. Emma Wilkins drove in the final run of the game when she singled to left field scoring Osteen to put the lead at 19-8 over the Vikings. Sayde Parris led the Bulldogs offense going five of five while hitting a home run, driving in six RBIs, and scoring three runs of her own. Sloand went three of five at the plate with two triples, a home run, and five RBIs while also scoring two runs as well. Emma Wilkins and Abbie Wilson both went three for six at the plate while Ashlyn Posey and Chloe Osteen each went three of five batting themselves. Allie Simpson, Addison Wheeler, Chloe Osteen, Emma Wilkins, and Myah Salters each had a stolen base for the Bulldogs in the contest. Chloe Sloand picked up the win for Boiling Springs from the pitching circle as she came on in relief for the final five innings striking out seven while only allowing three runs on five hits. The Bulldogs will return to action on Friday night when they host fellow district school Chesnee at 6:00 PM.
