With Hurricane Florence bearing down on the Carolina coast the Boiling Springs Bulldogs brought a storm of their own to Riverside on Thursday night defeating the Warriors 51-0 to start region play.
The region opener was moved to Thursday because of possible weather that could be hitting the Upstate on Friday but that didn’t effect the Bulldogs as they held the Warriors to forty-seven yards of offense while the Bulldogs offense gained almost four hundred yards. The Bulldogs got started early as the offense drove the ball fifty-four yards, after a Riverside onside kick to start the game, and finished the drive off with a one yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Charles McFadden. On Riverside’s next drive Boiling Springs Dre Pinckney intercepted a Warriors pass giving the Bulldogs possession at their own thirty-one yard line. The Bulldogs followed that interception up with a sixty-nine yard drive that ended with junior quarterback Aaron Thomas throwing a seven yard touchdown pass to senior Davis Brown giving Boiling Springs a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Boiling Springs offense scored four times in the second quarter as Tanner Robbins started and ended the quarters with field goals with the first being from twenty-seven yards out and the second from twenty-eight yards out giving the Bulldogs a 34-0 halftime lead. In between the two Robbins field goals Boiling Springs found the end zone twice as running back Trey Miller scored on a forty-one yard touchdown run and running back Kentavious Epps scored on an eleven yard touchdown run. After a defensive stop by the Bulldogs to start the second half Boiling Springs added to their lead when Caden Peeler returned a Warriors punt fifty-five yards giving the Bulldogs a 41-0 lead. With just over four minutes to go in the third quarter Boiling Springs running back Charles McFadden scored his second touchdown of the game again from one yard out extending the Bulldogs lead to 48-0 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter Boiling Springs capped their 51-0 victory off when Chad Stark kicked a nineteen yard field goal giving the Bulldogs their first region win this season. ”We really preached to our kids not to get caught up in it being a Thursday night atmosphere and they came out here with a lot of energy and excitement,” said Bulldogs Head Coach Rick Tate. “I’m glad we got out of here with a win and now the region grind starts next week with Dorman.” The Bulldogs will return to action next Friday as they host region rival Dorman who defeated Hillcrest 28-21 on Thursday night.
