After defeating Clover on Monday night to start region play, the Boiling Springs baseball team saw their rally fall just short as they fell to the Blue Eagles 8-5 in their first home region game of the season.
Clover jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first two innings behind singles in both innings from Dawson Wainscott and Walker Love that netted both players three RBIs each. In the top of the third inning the Blue Eagles made it 7-0 when Luke McCarter reached base on a walk before coming around to score on a Waylon Root infield single. Tristan Smith gave the Bulldogs their first run of the game when he hit a homerun to deep centerfield to cut the Clover lead to 7-1 at the end of the third inning. Clover made the score 8-1 in the top of the fifth inning Timothy Keefauver reached base on an error before coming around to score on a single by Root. Boiling Springs cut the Clover lead in half in the bottom of the fifth inning when Davis Starnes reached base on a walk before Tristan Smith followed with reaching base on a Clover error. With two runners on and two outs Boiling Springs' Will Holmes crushed a three run homer to right centerfield to put Clover's lead at 8-4 with two innings left to play. In the bottom of the sixth inning the Bulldogs added another run when Hudson Wilson reached base on a fielder's choice before coming around to score on a sacrifice bunt by Avery Stewart to cut the lead to 8-5. After holding Clover scoreless in the top of the seventh inning the Bulldogs were able to get two runners on in the bottom of the seventh inning as Holmes and Vance Wagner stood at first and second base. Bulldogs designated hitter Brent Fowler followed Wagner to the plate hiting a ball to centerfield that almost dropped in for a hit except for an amazing diving catch by Clover centerfielder Cooper Zohner that preserved the Blue Eagles victory. While the Bulldogs were unable to complete the comeback victory they did get a few impressive performances on Wednesday night as Will Holmes went two for two at the plate with a double and a three-run homerun along with a walk to go along with a hit-by-pitch. Carter Sloand also had a strong night in relief for the Bulldogs entering the game in the second inning while pitching three and a third innings of relief only allowing one earned run. Boiling Springs will return to action on Friday night when they travel to Clover to finish out the three game series against the Blue Eagles. Comments are closed.
