SIMPSONVILLE, SC - After picking up their first win of the season on Friday against Chesnee, the Boiling Springs boys basketball team built on that momentum to pick up their second straight road victory by defeating Hillcrest 75-70 on Tuesday night.
"I'm proud of how the guys responded tonight when Hillcrest made runs throughout the game to tie it up," said Boiling Springs head coach Curtis Nash. "There was a couple of times in the game where we were ahead, and Hillcrest hit us to close the lead, but our guys responded and fought back." Boiling Springs jumped out to an early 15-6 lead in the first quarter as Bulldogs junior Tre Locklear led the way for the team with five points. In the second quarter the Rams made a run at the Bulldogs outscoring them 21-16 in the quarter to put the Boiling Springs lead at 31-27 going into halftime. The Hillcrest run was led by junior guard Israel Hall who scored 10 of the Rams 21 points in the quarter. Boiling Springs guards Locklear and Austin Faile combined to score 13 of the Bulldogs 16 points in the quarter to fend off the Rams run and maintain the lead at halftime. Hillcrest kept their run going in the second half as they were able to tie the game at 52-52 when the buzzer sounded to end the third quarter. Juniors Chavis Lee-Carter and Tony Williams combined to score 14 of the Rams 25 points during their run in the third quarter. "Hillcrest tied the game at the end of the third quarter but the guys never let it get to them," said Nash. "We continued to play basketball as a team and fought to get the win tonight against a good Hillcrest team." In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs used strong defense and clutch free throw shooting down the stretch to outscore Hillcrest 23-18 in the final quarter to capture the victory. The Bulldogs were nine of eleven in the fourth quarter from the line, including Locklear going five of six in the final quarter. The Bulldogs had three scorers finish in double figures as Tre Locklear led the way with 27 points while senior Austin Faile added 14 points and junior Dominique Johnson added 11 points from the post position. Israel Hall led the way for Hillcrest with 19 points while three other Rams also finished the game in double figures. In the girls' game a big second half by Hillcrest led to them defeating Boiling Springs 61-32 on Tuesday night. Hillcrest held a 13-6 lead in the first quarter but a big second quarter from Bulldogs Amiah Ellis cut the Rams lead to 22-19 when the buzzer sounded for halftime. Ellis scored nine of the Bulldogs thirteen points in the quarter. The second half saw the Rams use a pressure defense to cut the Bulldogs scoring opportunities down and allowed them to use turnovers to push their lead into double digits.
