The Boiling Springs Bulldogs opened up region play on Tuesday night in the best way possible as they grabbed a 57-55 victory over the visiting Spartanburg Vikings. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the game but didn't hold the lead again until 3:50 was left in the third quarter. While it was the first game in region play it could have been easily mistaken for a playoff game as both teams brought an energy to the game that was only intensified by the loud crowds on both sides. The Bulldogs after grabbing the first lead of the game was outscored 14-8 over the rest of the quarter as Spartanburg grabbed a 14-10 first quarter lead with help from senior Uzziah Dawkins who had five points in the quarter. The game reached halftime with Spartanburg leading 29-24 behind a huge second quarter from junior Sean Jenkins. Jenkins led the Vikings in scoring in the first half with eleven of his fifteen first half points coming in the second quarter. The Bulldogs were able to claw their way back in the third quarter though behind six points from senior Seth Hewitt, with his layup being the points that gave Boiling Springs its first lead since the start of the game at 34-33 with 3:50 left in the third quarter. While the Vikings were able to reclaim the lead on the next possession it was a three pointer by junior Zach Baldinelli that gave the Bulldogs the lead 38-36 with 1:00 left in the third quarter. The Bulldogs claimed a 40-36 lead at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter it became a battle between both teams from the free throw lines and it was the Bulldogs who were able to escape with a 57-55 victory when Trayson Fowler grabbed a rebound on a missed free throw by Baldinelli with 1.6 seconds left in the game to secure the Boiling Springs victory. The Bulldogs were led on offense by junior Zach Baldinelli who scored fifteen points and grabbed six rebounds. Boiling Springs also got good games from senior Seth Hewitt who had ten points and six rebounds and also from Pierre Gentry who had eleven points. On a night the Bulldogs struggled from the free throw line, Gentry was the exception as he went nine of eleven from the free throw line. Spartanburg was led on offense by junior Sean Jenkins who scored twenty-four points for the Vikings. They also got a good night from senior Uzziah Dawkins who finished the night with thirteen points. The Bulldogs will travel to Dorman on Friday night. Lady Vikings Defeat Lady Bulldogs In the girl's game it was almost the exact opposite of the boys game as it was the Lady Bulldogs who led most of the first half only to fall to the Lady Vikings 42-34. The Bulldogs held a halftime lead of 16-15 over Spartanburg but were unable to hold on to that lead in the second half as Spartanburg had a 28-24 lead after the third quarter.
The Lady Vikings took the lead at 22-21 with 4:45 left in the third quarter and never looked back. The Lady Bulldogs were able to get the Vikings lead back down to five late in the fourth quarter but it was clutch free throw shooting from the Lady Vikings that helped Spartanburg capture the 42-34 victory. The Lady Bulldogs were led on offense by Caroline Reese who scored fourteen points. Amaya Richardson also added thirteen points for the Lady Bulldogs. Comments are closed.
