The old saying that a team didn't lose, they just ran out of time is the best way to describe the Boiling Springs lacrosse team's rally against Nation Ford as they fell 16-13 after trailing by as much as nine on Tuesday night.
"Our kids have been battling all season and our season has come down to just needing a few extra minutes and tonight was just another one of those nights," said Bulldogs head coach Justin Mills. "Every guy on our bench fought tonight and played well. That's all you can ask for from your team, we just need a few extra minutes." Boiling Springs trailed at the end of the first quarter 5-2 with their only goals coming from Luke Olson and a goal from Riley Alfonso, who stole a Nation Ford pass behind their goal before finding the left side of the goal off a right handed shot. The Bulldogs scored the first goal of the second quarter to narrow the Nation Ford lead to 5-3 off a goal from Olsen after Micah Horton took the faceoff down the right side of the field before finding Olsen for the shot. After the first goal of the second quarter it was all Nation Ford as they outscored the Bulldogs 7-0 the rest of the quarter to take a 12-3 halftime lead. Boiling Springs cut the lead to 14-7 heading into the final quarter as they outscored the Falcons 4-2 in the third quarter as they got two goals each from both Riley Alfonso and Brock Davis. Micah Horton started the Bulldogs off with a strong fourth quarter by claiming the opening faceoff before racing down the right side and finding Ethan Westhall in front of the goal for a right handed shot that found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 14-8. With just under six minutes left in the game Luke Calderon took a shot off an assist from Mathis Oslund to narrow the Nation Ford lead to 14-9. Nation Ford responded with two goals over a forty second period from both Tyler Maloney and Ryan Walczak to push their lead back to seven at 16-9 over the Bulldogs. With just over four minutes left to go in the game the Bulldogs started their rally as Brock Davis found the back of the net on a shot that deflected off the Falcons goalie to cut the lead to 16-10. Davis struck again taking a rebound off a shot by Horton and finding the back of the net on a right handed shot just inside the three minute mark to cut the lead to 16-11 as the Bulldogs continued their offensive attack. Just thirty seconds after Davis' last goal Mathias Oslund found the back of the net to cut the lead to 16-12 and was followed just seconds later by another goal from Olsen to cut the lead to 16-13. Boiling Springs continued their offensive onslaught over the next few seconds but a penalty gave possession to Nation Ford who was able to melt clock as the Bulldogs just ran out of time. The Bulldogs will return to action on Thursday as they host Fort Mill in a game that can control their playoff destiny. Comments are closed.
