BOILING SPRINGS, SC - After defeating Clover on Thursday to start their season, the Boiling Springs boys' lacrosse team backed up that performance on Saturday as they defeated Spartanburg 18-1 to open their regular season home schedule and improve their record to 2-0 to start the 2022 season.
"Saturdays are notorious games for starting out the game flat and we reminded the guys of that coming out of the locker room and the guys responded with some early goals," said Bulldogs head coach Justin Mills. "We were able to get a lot of guys in today and I think that will only help us as the season goes along. Coming out strong to start the season is thanks to the leadership of our seniors and the rest of our team following behind them as we have great captains along with having freshman step up in big areas that we haven't had them do in years past." Boiling Springs got the scoring started early as they found the back of the net early with an unassisted goal from senior Mathias Oslund less than a minute into the game. The Bulldogs freshman Lincoln Huskey stole a Spartanburg pass just in front of the goal three minutes later before firing a left-handed shot that found the back of the net to put Boiling Springs up 2-0. Boiling Springs added two more goals to end the quarter as sophomore Elijah Smith and Mathias Oslund both added goals to give the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter the Bulldogs stretched their lead with seven unanswered goals as they pushed their lead to 11-0 when the buzzer sounded for halftime. Chase Miller, a senior midfielder, started the scoring when he stole a Spartanburg pass meant for the goalie before firing a right-handed shot to push the Bulldogs lead to 5-0 early in the second quarter. The Bulldogs got six more goals in the quarter as they got two goals from Elijah Smith and Mathias Oslund along with one goal each from freshman Javen Chhhim and Lincoln Huskey. Miller added three more goals to start the third quarter to push the Bulldogs lead to 14-0 over the Vikings, as the goals in the third quarter accounted for three of his game high six goals in the game. "Chase picks up every groundball and puts it in the back of the net," said Mills. "He got a lot of those goals just from all-out effort." Micah Horton added one of the most impressive goals of the afternoon when he was able to nab a shot, that deflected off the Spartanburg goal, out of the air and fired a jump shot that found the back of the net to push the Bulldogs lead to 15-0 over the Vikings. Miller added two more goals to start the fourth quarter before Spartanburg scored their first goal of the afternoon with just over a minute left in the game. The Bulldogs responded to the Spartanburg goal just seconds later though when junior Monty Carmona fired a shot to the back of the net giving the Bulldogs a commanding 18-1 victory over rival Spartanburg. The Bulldogs had 13 assists in the game with Elijah Smith leading the way with four while he was followed close behind by both Mathias Oslund and Lincoln Huskey with three assists each. Boiling Springs also led the way in faceoff victories defeating the Vikings 18-5 with Micah Horton winning the most for the Bulldogs with 13 faceoff victories. Boiling Springs will next take the field on Thursday when they host a key region matchup against Nation Ford and it's a matchup that Mills says his team is ready to play as they know the importance of the game. "It's been a long time since we've been able to line up head-to-head and feel confident about what we have going into the game," said Mills. "Our guys are ready and would play the game tomorrow. They have some good experience under their belt already and if we can win Thursday it puts us in a good spot going forward this season." Comments are closed.
