BOILING SPRINGS, SC- On Tuesday night the Boiling Springs girls' lacrosse team just couldn't overcome a five-goal run by Spartanburg in the second half as they fell to the Vikings 13-10 in the season opener for the Bulldogs.
In the first half the Vikings jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals by Sophie Butehorn and Sallie Barre over a forty-second period of time just eight minutes into the game. Mia Lockwood gave the Bulldogs their first goal of the season on a penalty shot at just under the fifteen-minute mark of the game to cut the Spartanburg lead in half at 2-1. Spartanburg's Madelyn Stephens pushed the Vikings lead out to a 3-1 advantage on a goal just inside the twelve-minute mark of the first half. Trailing 3-1, the Bulldogs went on a two-goal run that was capped at the nine-minute mark when midfielder Lani Hodge caught the ball on the left side of the goal before tying the game at 3-3 on a right-handed shot that found the back left of the net. As the game went towards what looked like a tie at halftime, the Vikings Mary Mac Evans was able to find the back of the net off an assist from Katie Akridge to give Spartanburg a 4-3 lead heading into halftime. Boiling Springs tied the game to start the second half as attacker Brooklyn Easler took a breakaway down the right side of the field hitting a right-handed shot that found the left side of the net to tie the game at 4-4 just two minutes into the second half. Both teams traded goals over a minute of game time just passed the twenty-minute mark as Spartanburg's Sallie Barre scored to give the Vikings a 5-4 lead before the Bulldogs attacker Kirsten Fisher found the back of the net to tie the match at 5-5 off an assist from Emily Krechko. For five minutes in the second half, Spartanburg put the difference in the match as they scored five goals from four different players from the fifteen-minute mark to the ten-minute mark of the match, in what ended up being the advantage the Bulldogs were unable to overcome. The Vikings got goals during the five-goal run from Katie Akridge, Sophie Butehorn, Caroline Patrick, and Mary Mac Evans to give Spartanburg a 10-5 lead with just over ten minutes to go in the match. The Bulldogs Mia Lockwood broke the Vikings run when she found the back of the net to cut the Vikings lead to 10-6. Spartanburg got back-to-back goals to push their lead to 12-6 before the Bulldogs midfielder Emma Wood weaved through the Vikings defense for a right-handed shot that found the back of the net to cut the lead to 12-7. The Vikings added another goal at the four-minute mark when Caroline Patrick found the back of the net to make their lead 13-7 over the Bulldogs. Over the final three minutes of the game, Boiling Springs got goals from Kirsten Fisher, Lani Hodge, and Annaleigh McCallister but the Bulldogs ran out of time as they fell to the Vikings 13-10. Boiling Springs will look to rebound on Thursday night as they host Clover in their second match of the season and first region match of the season. Comments are closed.
