BOILING SPRINGS, SC- On the first play from scrimmage Boiling Springs running back Carmelo Martin went 80 yards for a touchdown to give the Bulldogs an early lead but despite the fast start they couldn’t overcome a strong rushing attack from Greenwood as the Eagles came away with a 45-21 victory to end the regular season for both teams.
Greenwood came into the game at the #3 ranked team in the latest South Carolina Prep Media poll. "We did some good things out there tonight," said Bulldogs head coach Rick Tate. "They laid the ball on the ground a few times tonight and we didn't take advantage of those chances we were given. It's kind of what has happened to us all season but it's not from a lack of effort from the kids." After the first touchdown by the Bulldogs, Greenwood scored twenty-one unanswered points to end the first quarter as Daylan Rappley started the scoring with a sixteen yard touchdown run on a quarterback keeper over the right side to tie the game at 7-7. Lowndes Still added a twelve yard touchdown run along with a twenty-five yard touchdown run from VE Morton to give the Eagles a 21-7 lead when the horn sounded to end the first quarter. Greenwood made it twenty-eight straight points less than three minutes into the second quarter when Rappley went for his second rushing score of the game on a seven yard touchdown run on fourth down to put the Eagles up 28-7 over the Bulldogs. On the Eagles next possession they fumbled the ball that was recovered by the Bulldogs Zach Watson at the Greenwood forty-seven yard line. The ensuing drive saw Ketrone Adams convert a fourth and thirteen by running down the left side of the field for seventeen yards and a first down. Kam Williams followed with a thirteen yard run up the middle before Adams struck again with a seventeen yard touchdown run up the middle that saw him shred three different Eagles defenders to cut the Greenwood lead to 28-14 over the Bulldogs. Greenwood added a thirty yard field goal at the end of the first half to make their lead 31-14 when the teams went into halftime. Daylan Rappley grabbed his third touchdown of the game when he ran the ball over the right side for twenty-five yards for a touchdown to put the Eagles ahead 38-14 as it was the only score of the third quarter. On the first drive of the fourth quarter Greenwood fumbled the ball which was recovered by the Bulldogs at the Eagles thirty yard line. The Bulldogs took advantage of the turnover when Kam Williams ran the ball in from one yard out to put the Eagles lead at 38-21 over the Bulldogs. Greenwood added another touchdown with five minutes to go in the game when Rappley found Seth Henderson on a twelve yard touchdown to put the Eagles up 45-21. Carmelo Martin led the Bulldogs rushing attack with 127 yards on eleven carries and a touchdown. The Bulldogs defense forced four turnovers on Friday night as Zach Watson recovered two of the fumbles. VE Morton led the rushing attack for Greenwood as he recorded 133 yards on sixteen carries with a touchdown. Friday night also marked the final home game for the 2021 seniors which Tate says he's going to miss because of the relationships they've built. “You get close to those guys because most of them have been here since the ninth grade," said Tate. "This group is no different and I told them my biggest joy is when I run into them fifteen years from now and they have a spouse on side along with kids running around on the other with lots of success. As a coach that's all I can ask for and that's what I want for each of them." Boiling Springs will now head to the first round of the 5A playoffs as they travel a familiar route to Northwestern which Tate says is a great opportunity for his team. ”We played good enough to get into the playoffs this year which only fifteen other teams were able to do this year and we're one of the sixteen that still has a shot," said Tate. "I told our kids number one seeds get beat all the time and if they didn't they wouldn't give any of the other teams a chance to even be in the playoffs. Northwestern is a good team but we're still going to load the bus next Friday and give it a shot." Comments are closed.
