Going into Wednesday night the Boiling Springs softball team knew they had a tough hill to climb to win the District Championship but they were just half an inning from taking care of that first step before ultimately falling to Fort Mill 5-2 in game one and ending the Bulldogs season.
Boiling Springs fell behind 1-0 in the second inning as Emma Tisdale tripled and then came home on an Emily Harris single to right field. Both teams had opportunities to score throughout the game but impressive pitching from the Bulldogs Olivia Hall and Fort Mill's Peyton Lemire along with great play from their defenses kept the game close. In the top of the sixth inning the Bulldogs were finally able to get on the scoreboard as Ragan Bristol reached base on a Fort Mill error and later moved up to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Grace McKinney. Bre McAbee, who came on to run for Bristol, was able to score on a single to right field by Hall to tie the game at 1-1 and giving the Bulldogs their first score against Lemire in two games over the last week. Alexis McFalls, who came on to run for Breanna Stanley who reached base on a single, would make the score 2-1 in favor of the Bulldogs when Abbie Threatt hit a single to right field. The Bulldogs kept the lead at the end of the sixth inning thanks in part to a good defensive play by Hall who threw out a Fort Mill base runner at third base after the runner advanced too far towards the plate and Boiling Springs shortstop Jaycie Osment was able to get the tag on the runner to preserve the Bulldogs lead. After being unable to extend the lead in the top half of the seventh inning the Bulldogs went into the bottom half of the inning three outs from a chance to play a second game. The Yellow Jackets were able to get two runners on with two outs and were still trailing by one when Reagan Smith hit a double to tie the game at 2-2. On the very next at-bat and runners on second and third Fort Mill's Tisdale was able to take an outside pitch and put it over the right centerfield fence for a walk-off homerun and giving the Yellow Jackets a 5-2 victory. With the victory Fort Mill will advance to the Upper State championship round where they will face Hillcrest who defeated Dorman on Wednesday. Boiling Springs with the loss will say goodbye to seniors Zoey Stewart and Grace McKinney but will be looking to build on their success from this year next season as they will return eleven underclassmen from this year's team into the 2020 season.
