After almost a year since their last game was played, the Boiling Springs boys soccer team returned to the field on Tuesday night with a 5-0 home victory over their fellow district school Chesnee.
"We knew Chesnee had a young team so we wanted to work on things we'll need against stronger teams," said Bulldogs head coach Jack Underwood. "The region that we're in is a very strong region with a lot of good players so we're going to have be ready to play when we hit the field committing very few mistakes and playing very clean soccer throughout the season." Boiling Springs grabbed their first lead of the game in pretty impressive fashion as freshman forward Yonathan Gonzalez made a diving header that found the back of the net off a cross pass to put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 just two minutes into the game. Senior midfielder Jonathan Dill added another goal six minutes later when he took a pass from the right side of the field and hit a shot off the inside of his right foot that found the bottom left of the goal to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. Dill added another goal just before halftime to put the Bulldogs up 4-0 when the halftime buzzer sounded. Dill wasn't the only Boiling Springs player with two goals on Tuesday as Bulldogs junior forward Christian Gonzalez-Calihu scored his first goal at the fifteen minute mark of the first half to put the Bulldogs ahead 3-0 but was the only Bulldogs player to score in the second half as he used a left footed shot off a cross from junior Kaillou Touch to put Boiling Springs ahead 5-0 at the ten minute mark of the second half. Boiling Springs used a possession style attack on Tuesday to work for goals against the Eagles and Coach Underwood said that's the style of play the Bulldogs are planning on using this season. "A big part of what we like to do is possession soccer," said Underwood. "We like to have the ball at our feet using a lot of passes and moving the ball well. We want to try and deny the other team possession so that we can dictate the game." As we all get accustomed to the strange ways the pandemic effect schedules this year we can add one more as the Bulldogs game against Chesnee will be their last game until March 26th when they host Gaffney in their first region matchup of the season.
